Balah becomes the 6th member of the Dukes to earn a college commitment for the 2022-23 season. The Dukes are so excited for Jonathan and his family and look forward to watching him grow at Holy Cross. He is only the SECOND US College recruit on the team (there are seven listed) as he has five teammates heading to U-Sports. pointstreaksites.com/view/ojhl/home-of-the-ojhl-1/commitments-2

Good to see Coach Riga getting his 2nd recruit from St. Mark’s. Local kid from Grafton, I believe, and a good baseball player too.

St. Marks grad Eric Green was a key to winning a league championship in basketball. Let's keep the pipeline going. There is an Edge to be had in recruiting if you can get a regional prospect to give you a hometown discount. Nice to see local kids validating HC Athletics.

I had that same thought. In recruiting for all 27 sports. The halo effect doesn't stop at the County line, but regional prospects absorb more of the community image of HC directly and indirectly. When the image improves the ripple reaches them first. It is similar for overall admissions, imo. It is a minor factor but positive energy always attracts to some degree.

Nowhere does it say when he is going to Holy Cross. Riga might not even be the coach by the time he heads to college. He will be 18 in Feb. 2023 and likely has at least one year of juniors to go. www.eliteprospects.com/player/732609/james-lyver

Who knows, you may be right. And, by the time he gets to HC, you may no longer be posting. We'll see.

Stay vigilant for signs of dehydration. That's a major side effect of your glass always being half empty😂.
There is zero concern about Coach Riga's tenure. He'll get an opportunity for a full recruiting cycle. His hires and recruits indicate he's connecting with the local hockey community. He hasn't made a silk purse out of a sow's ear yet, but he has a few stitches in.

My point is this kid could be up to three years out now...he could get injured, decommit, etc...hockey recruits are notorious for changing their minds and remember his high school coach is a BU great.

That's all good info and we learn a lot from your knowledge of college sports but when a coach recruits a kid and he commits it's a positive. It isn't any more complicated than that at this stage.

With the Portal, the pessimist in me doesn't like the chances this kid is wearing a Holy Cross jersey in the Fall of 2023. I hope I'm wrong for the health of the program.

If we start winning, kids who are strong players will stay for four years. See Football, Holy Cross. If we don’t, they won’t. See Men’s Basketball, Holy Cross.

I wonder if TPTB in colleges sponsoring hockey are getting a little concerned. The players don't matriculate with their own age group, they don't come directly from secondary school and if AHA level hockey players are jumping ship at a much greater clip than FCS level football players and students in general, the players aren't as representative of the student body as some envision.
How about a D-1 league made up of players who go directly from senior in high school to freshman in college and let the puck fall where it may?

Didn't Radomsky bounce to Alaska-Fairbanks over playing his senior season in Worcester?

Three of our 2022 graduates will play their final season at a place that has a graduate school. Other than Radomsky, the only other player we lost to the portal was a lightly used player (0 points) who is taking his talents to D3 SUNY Oswego. Doesn’t seem like we have a big transfer issue so far under Riga. If we start to win consistently, I won’t be too worried about losing our good players to the portal before they graduate.

From a College Hockey newsletter
‘04 defenseman C.J. Foley (★★★¾), who was committed to Holy Cross, is back on the market. Foley is from Hanover, Mass. and he has seven points (1g, 6a) in 15 games for the Salmon Arm Silverbacks of the BCHL this season. Before juniors, he played at Thayer Academy.

What does '04 mean? YOB? Are hockey recruits being grouped like horses eligible for the Kentucky Derby now?
