RJ, Humphrey and Rabinovich did not participate, didn't even see Rabinovich in building. Kyrell very quick was able to get to the hoop and finish a number of times, didn't take any outside shots when I was there but in drills prior to scrimmage didn't hit any of the shots he took from beyond the arc. Kenney pretty active got a few hoops around the basket missed badly on outside attempts. Luc looks much improved, very active around the hoop made a few nice moves which he finished and rebounded well, his length gave Gates trouble around the bucket. Martindale hit a few outside shots and took the ball to the hoop a few times, a good offensive player who will need to be a consistent scorer this year. Gates looks like he lost some weight but his game remains taking the ball to the hoop, although he did take a few outside shots with mixed results. Dorsey had a rough day missed a number of long range shots including a couple of air balls. He didn't really handle the ball much as he was paired with Kyrell who did most of the ball handling for their team. Hopefully just an off day. Defense was basically man to man with trapping concepts. Overall the outside shooting was atrocious and could be a real problem if this wasn't just an off day for some of the guys.

What's with RJ, Humphrey and Rabinovich? Injury, illness or some conflicting business?

What's with RJ, Humphrey and Rabinovich? Injury, illness or some conflicting business? RJ and Humphrey are a bit nicked up. coming off ankle problems.. MR was is a "health and safety protocol" , but he is all right.... Outside shooting was not good overall, however the team D looked good. Lots of pressure, both full court and on the ball...Looks like there will be a lot of players getting time, Coach said he hopes to use a lot of pressure D...The team looks "long", big guards with long wingspans. Malcolm Townsel looked like a changed player, he was the surprise of the day.. Louth-M Coulibaly is a big physical presence. He looked good around the hoop, and made a few nice feeds to cutters.. Austin Lewis has a good handle, he is more of a perimeter type player than a post player...Nolan Dorsey is long, looks like he could be a defensive disrupter, he didn't shoot it well today.. Kyrell Luc is very quick and has a very good handle. He gets to the rim and can finish... Caleb Kenney is going to be a handful. He has physical size, and can get off the floor...6'5" guard...He was solid on both ends of the court.. Gates is a handfull around the hoop, he finds or creates space to score.. Time will tell how this group will perform. I think they will be a good defensive team, mixing both zone and M2M...I think they will score around the hoop and look to push the ball of their D. part of the scrimmage the shot clock was set at 18 seconds....If somebody besides Martindale can consistently hit the 3 ball that will greatly increase what can be done inside...

DiMarz Could you please say how Townsel showed this improvement ? On offense he moved much better, went to the hoop, played with confidence...He didn't look confused out there, he contributed on both ends of the floor..Last season he always looked lost out there and hesitated quite a bit. Today he just played, reacted on both ends of the floor..

For what it's worth during the scrimmage portion, what looked like the first team was Humphrey, Gates, Martindale, Kenney, and a member of the staff (who I assume was taking RJ Johnson's spot)
The second squad was Coulibaly, Luc, Lewis, Dorsey, and Townsel. Rabinovich not being there could be a major wildcard in the starting five

I thought Dorsey had a real nice free throw stroke. In my limited time watching he sank almost every one while other players were mostly clanking them. Dorsey plays with a lot of confidence despite the missed (badly) outside shots.

RJJ, Bubba and MRabs project to be important pieces to this year's team. Would have been nice to have had them all available yesterday, particularly to see RJJ go up against Luc, who looks very promising early on.
Share the potential concerns about outside shooting - even aside from yesterday, I just don't see that being a big part of this team's offense this year. On the other hand, most everyone seems to have that take it to the rim hard mentality. Bo in particular looked strong in that regard.
Agree with DiMarz about Townsell. Not one thing in particular was overly impressive, but he was very visible yesterday; as opposed to last year, when it seemed hard to notice he was on the floor.
Note to other old timers: I think we are going to have to accept from day one that even though ALewis is very tall, he is not a back to the basket post player. He seems more like an extremely long 3 man, with some nice skills with the ball. Even though I don't remember him making one jump shot, he looked very comfortable and fluid taking them. Facially resembles AVB a little. I could see him being very effective in the future.
I think GG is 6-6 in the way AB was 6-5, if you get my drift.
Some early positive signs with Louth. Will be interesting to watch once he gets some games under his belt. Spend a lot of time battling against GG near the basket - at this point GG has a big edge with his experience and footwork, but going up against him every day should help Louth a great deal. Having said all that, these guys absolutely need to stay healthy. Wish there was one more big body on the roster (even after counting Rabs).
Caleb K reminds me of someone, but for the life of me I can't make the connection. Could be a real physical presence in time.
Overall, the transformation of style and roster composition is complete; that's for sure. From what I've been reading about UMass, they have a similar roster (lots of athletic mid size guys). Nice team to scrimmage against I would think.

One of the things that jumped out at me from CBN’s first team was the lack of physical size we had, not so much height wise but weight wise. While looking out at the court I often thought it looked like it was men playing against boys. It sounds like those days are behind us.

Bo didn't have a heckuva lot of body fat on him last year, but he seems to have dropped whatever fat he had. Not wide or bulky by any means, but super wiry to beat the band.....and I mean that as a compliment. I am hoping he can be the type to draw a lot of fouls.

How did Humphrey look?
It looks like he might be taller and longer.
In an earlier post I suggested he has the potential to be a factor, especially if he can stay out of foul trouble. Last year he didn't get a ton of minutes, perhaps due to his spot in the rotation, his making adjustments to the college game, and his tendency to pick up quick fouls.
Interested in the thoughts of of those who attended and thanks to all for the thoughtful and detailed comments.

For the record, after the practice HCBN noted that the day’s outside shooting “wasn’t as good as it’s been recently”.

EFG Humphrey didn't participate yesterday. As far as outside shooting is concerned, RJ, along with Martindale, is probably our best shooter and he didn't play yesterday. Gates fired up a few threes yesterday and I don't think that will be part of the plan when the season starts. Hopefully, Kyrell will be at least an adequate outside shooter because defenders will have a hard time staying in front of him if they don't give him a little room.
