Thanks to all the posters for their detailed observations.
As I’ve stated before, the biggest weakness of this team is clearly outside shooting. I certainly hope that Coach Nelson spends a LOT of practice time on offensive sets against a zone defense…because once we get into PL play, I would expect to see most teams go to zone against us and dare us to beat them from three.

Better rebounding and pushing the game up the floor would certainly be an important step as well. If HC does not give them time to set up their defense, that may be as important as 3 point shooting.

I think Martindale will be the key shooter, at least from three point land--no great insight on my part there--but I think he can be very good. Judson shot 8/28= .286 on threes in January then a stellar 12/22= .545 on threes in February. Perhaps RJJ, who appears to have a good stroke, will be called upon to shoot more from the outside?? RJ was 14/41=.341 on threes for the season

I was not aware that RJ had undergone surgery. Di we know when it was performed? Not exactly sure when he had it, possibly a month or so ago. He had hand surgery this off season as well. Played with a broken shooting hand all last season. I’ve known his family for a while. Been following him since high school.

While this is true, playing a zone against us is a lot more difficult if we are playing great defense at the other end, getting stops/turnovers, and pushing the ball up the floor — which it sounds like we now actually have the roster to do. I am encouraged about the positive comments on the defense, but also a bit cautious because it sounds the D wasn’t exactly matched up with a juggernaut offense yesterday. I am also encouraged by the comments about Townsell. I had sort of written him off, but if he can even contribute 10-15 minutes in the post, that would be a huge boost for Gates, Louth, and Rabinovich.

I don’t think Townsel will be playing any time in the post.

There are more efficient ways to beat a zone tha a 3. For example, most teams who play zone(remember in the recent past when we did not shoot well ,from 3, I believe no PL team played zone vs us) play a 2-3. So if the D is a 2-3, the best way to get the best shot is a high low set and enter the ball to the high post. He should have options, the best being to the low post man cutting across the lane for a shot at the rim. If one of the 2 wing defenders plays that, there should be an open man in the vacated area. This can result in an open 2 from the short corner.or an open three to our best shooter.

Absolutely agree. That’s why I think the development of Coulibaly, especially rebounding wise, is critical.

Well, I guess if I had gone for 32 in the NIT championship game i may have gotten some special attention. I see they did get a pic of our group watching; have to admit I look better with a mask on.

No wonder we couldn’t shoot. No one is sitting in their usual seats. Clear jinx.

It wouldn’t surprise me if Kenney got some post minutes. He is a good sized kid with some hops and a long wing span. Maybe he turns out to be the Swiss Army knife of the team especially if he can hit a jump shot.

Seems like the sweet spot for a school like us might be to look for 6’5” or 6’6” bangers who aren’t tall enough for the big boys but can be really good players and quite effective in low-mid D1. Any big taller than that who will come to HC is likely a prioject of some sort. Those sometimes pay dividends down the road and sometimes don’t. Transfer market another option for bigs for us.
