American with a big win tonight at Virginia, 69-56. First road win vs. a Power 5 school since 1998. Jade Edwards one point shy of a triple-double (9 points, 10 rebounds, 11 assists). UVA is terrible this year, I know (the Hoos were picked to finish last in the ACC this season in the preseason poll), but they're still an ACC school. Huge accomplishment for us. 100% agree NotJuan. Huge win in a tough year for non-conference games in the league. American looks good early. You're right about UVA being a bit down but still a great road win for AU and the league. You can expect the Virginia coach to resign/be fired sooner rather than later.

Tina Thompson was a great player, but is turning out to be a poor coach. On her way to her fourth consecutive poor season. Among their losses this year was an 11-point home loss to Richmond, who is coached by Bucknell's former coach. In any event, nice win for AU.

Wins over Gonzaga, Oregon, Penn State, Villanova, and, tonight, UVA.

Woodruff has certainly done a terrific job, Bison137. I prefer to wait to see all of the previous coach recruits move on to get a better assessment. Roussell left a champion and full team behind. O'Brien is the last/best of that coach's bunch and after this season we can get a better view. I am sure Woodruff will do great just not ready to give him the nod as best quite yet. As I think about it, there are also several not so good coaches in the league.

Good for her, I say. And good for American for creating an environment of support for its coach. The grass isn't always greener. If you've built a life, are secure in your job and happy, what else do you need? Even if Marist were to open, I am guessing she would stay in DC.

I was at Marist earlier this year and the support they get for WBB is great....Very underrated facility and should be what the Hart Center should strive for.

Having watched a lot of Troyan's teams, I definitely wouldn't put her in the class of Woodruff or Gebbia or some others. Over the past nine years, her teams are 75-79 in PL play. Her last PL coach of the year award was in 2009 and her last PL championship in a real season was in 2010. She is a lot like Brett Reed, i.e. a good recruiter but a mediocre bench coach. This year may show a lot. Troyan has the preseason favorite, a team that returns most of their players - including their leading scorer and rebounder - from last year. Bucknell, in contrast, returns one starter.

But I don't think she downgrades expectations too much from year to year and there's a lot to be said for that too. She never makes it about her either. The league is better with coaches like Troyan in it. Class act. Best coaches in the PL over the last 10 years? Gebbia at American Pemper at Navy Rousell at Bucknell

Gebbia at American Pemper at Navy Rousell at Bucknell Definitely Gebbia and Roussell. Pemper was fired by Navy, after a 17-42 record over her final two years so at least some people don't rank her very highly. Maria Moseley was a very good recruiter, but her tenure was too short, I think, to include her. Some would probably include Dave Magarity, but I was not a big fan of his coaching. His teams were sensational when he had Kelsey Minato, who is one of the two top players ever to play in the PL imo. But without Minato, he was 85-84 in Patriot League play and did not make it to even one PL championship game in the 11 seasons he coached without Minato on the floor. It's early to judge, but thus far Trevor Woodruff looks like he may be better than Roussell. He is a better defensive coach, and he eliminated the turnover problems that affected Roussell's teams. His first recruiting class was mediocre - which was not surprising given he and his staff had no D1 experience - but his current freshmen look very good and his class of 2022 and 2023 commitments (6 in total) look very good. At Scranton, Woodruff's record was 113-10, with some good runs in the postseason, and thus far at Bucknell he is 40-9 (26-3 in PL play).

Not sure how people feel about Pemper personally or the details of her firing. There's no argument about her coaching skills though. She's one of the best of the last decade. Brought Navy to semifinals in playoffs at Navy 9 of her 12 years. Won three PL titles (Navy never did that) so three trips to the NCAAs. Also three trips to the WNIT (which goes to the second place league team I believe). She came from division three Bowdoin where she built that program into national recognition. Her record as head coach there was 235-48. Let's give Woodruff time. He might turn out to be better than Roussell and we'll see over these next few seasons. Full agree that this year's frosh group is very good. In fairness to Roussell, he took over a dumpster fire of a culture and had to rebuild. Of course, if you have to rebuild, best to be coaching at Bucknell where your facilities and campus are top notch.

Regarding Roussell vs Woodruff - It's a lot easier to recruit to a program that is now a name brand that has had continued success over the past 5 years versus inheriting a downtrodden program in need of a total rebuild. What Roussell did to Bucknell is similar in my mind to what Courtney Banghart did at Princeton, albeit on a lesser scale.

I know who your other top two player would be Bison, the all time great scoring guard from Bucknell whose name escapes me but played in the WNBA many years ago. While other strong scorers drove through defenders, she glided past them for a bucket.

Averaged 21 ppg for her career - better than Minato - and 27 ppg as a senior, the best ever in the PL. Led the PL in scoring three consecutive years AND led the PL in assists three consecutive years. Still ranks 2nd all-time in the PL in assists as well as scoring. Still 7th in career steals as well. Not a bad career..

What Roussell did to Bucknell is similar in my mind to what Courtney Banghart did at Princeton, albeit on a lesser scale. Yes, that's true. However one thing to remember is that Bucknell was not as downtrodden as people might think. Yes, they had an awful season just before Roussell arrived - but that was due to a toxic culture and a head coach who should have been replaced earlier. Due to reasons other than lack of talent, the team way underperformed. The first eight weeks it was due to a head coach who got the worst out of the players and was hated by many. For the last eight weeks it was due to that coach having been fired and replaced by a weak staff with no one who was qualified to be a head coach. (During that era, most assistant coaches didn't even stay two years.) In any event, her ouster - although a great thing - came as a shock. It was caused by an uprising of former alums, parents, other alums, and even some media - an uprising that produced an unexpectedly fast result. Rousell, to his credit, very quickly fixed the toxic environment when he arrived after that season. He made basketball fun, reached out to the fans, and totally changed the culture. But one thing to keep in mind is that he did inherit two future 1st team All=PL players (Shelby Romine and Audrey Dotson). Also inherited a very good rebounding PF and a 6-2 forward who would have made the all-defensive team had they had one at the time. Also a 6-1 former all-rookie selection and a couple of solid guards. In short, he had a team that had average PL talent before he recruited his first player. Then, to his credit, he went out and brought in a great freshman class, including a future PL POY.

Gebbia at American Pemper at Navy Rousell at Bucknell I wouldn't begin to rank them, but I'd just say Megan's won PL titles with a guard-oriented team built around Jen Dumiak (with most of Matt Corkery's players), then a post-oriented team built around Cecily Carl (with most of her own recruits). Now she's putting another really good team together this year that's kind of a hybrid-Jade Edwards is clearly our best player, but we may play better when she's not the leading scorer, but acts more as a distributor. Eight wins shy of becoming the program's all-time winningest coach, in only eight-plus seasons (and, really, last year shouldn't count as a "season"). She's 92-43 (.681) in the PL and won 20 or more games four times in eight seasons. I'll let other people say who's better/best. We're just really happy and lucky to have her.

Agree with you, NotJuan. Gebbia is a great coach. Also class act. She's also been there long enough so that yes she inherited some of the talent left from Corkery and had success, but also has proven herself and won with her own kids. 8 seasons is a good sample size for your case. Not ranking anyone but she's right up there in any conversation about best coaches in the league.
