About 15 years ago, DR told me that the Columbia job paid $250k per year plus a rent-free house. I have to think Ivy comp levels are even higher today. So agree that one of those New England openings would be tough to turn down unless HC's development office manages to find someone to endow the football coaching position.

There was a point in time, at least during my years, where HC provided the head coach with a house. No idea if that’s still the case though.

Pete Lembo may be the right comparison for Chesney. He was 44-14 in 5 seasons at Lehigh (Chesney currently 22-15), won 8+ games every year (this could be Chesney's first), brought a team to the 1-AA Quarterfinals, and finished in the Top 25 three times (Chesney one finish at #25 so far). That level of success at Lehigh was enough to get Lembo the job at Elon, who had gone 14-42 in the previous 5 years, and whose previous coach lasted only two years. After 5 years at Elon, a 35-22 record, and three Top 25 finishes, Lembo was able to get a job the job at Ball State. Here's the major difference between Chesney and these four coaches -- Holy Cross is the third program that Chesney has been the head coach at. For the preceding four names, their stop at PL schools was their first time being a head coach. There definitely is something to be said for Chesney winning at every school he's been. Not to discount Chensey's past success, but D1 ADs are going to have trouble selling alums/donors on past success at schools called Salve Regina and Assumption.

Don't hire another Walt Bell. Don't hire a coordinator that hides behind a play sheet and calls offensive plays. That in my opinion is not a real head coach. Coach the game and both sides of the ball.
Did Lombardi call his own plays. How about Parcells? How about Belichick? Saban?

You roll the dice when you hire a coordinator to start his head coaching at your D-1 school, yet D-1 schools love to do it. Lombardi and Parcels were master motivators. Belichick is a master of every detail in all three phases of the game. Chesney is both.

Chesney's next loss will give him the same amount that he had during his entire five full years at Assumption and already more than his three full seasons at Salve. 🤷♂️That is how much success he has at previous stops.

Leave it to some "fans" to focus on losses.

I hope HC keeps the secret to itself that head coaches who win a ton at lower levels may well continue to be successful as they move up the food chain. There are also examples of where this hasn’t worked out (Mike Maker at Williams 147-32 and Marist 28-97) but I’ll take my chances on a guy who has won as a head coach, particularly at multiple places.

I probably interviewed over a thousand people for hiring or promoting hundreds of people in my career. The bulk of my career was with a company that for many years lived by the mantra of promoting from within and hiring people more or less for life and developing their people. One of the many things they did for me was have me trained on how to hire and hiring 101 was: "look for patterns of past success."
I agree with 92 that Chesney has a demonstrable "pattern of success" though my guess is that these search firms that the schools use to find candidates for head coaches are very aware of looking for the Chesneys in the world of coaching who have demonstrated over and over that they can overcome obstacles and be successful almost anywhere.

Not sure if this was posted here yesterday (Chesney photo leads the story): www.underdogdynasty.com/2021/11/8/22768773/who-should-be-the-next-umass-head-coach-top-candidates-bob-chesney-liam-coen-brent-davisBob Chesney Head Coach-Holy Cross
The current head coach of Holy Cross would need to see a major investment in football by UMass to leave Worcester for Amherst, but that doesn’t mean the Minutemen shouldn’t make a run on him. Chesney has turned Holy Cross into a perennial playoff contender, with the Crusaders boasting one of the best offenses and defenses at the FCS level.
Chesney would bring a defensive background to UMass, which they desperately need after years of failing on that side of the ball. He’s also been a head coach in New England, in three different spots, for more than a decade now. So, he knows the region very well. Add to that, Chesney is still a young and energetic coach. In a lot of respects, UMass should be going Bob Chesney or bust.

The article also mentions 'Conlin' from Fordham as a possibility - without a conference affiliation this job is a dead end

The article also mentions 'Conlin' from Fordham as a possibility - without a conference affiliation this job is a dead end That's the standard position, but if you are building and progressing steadily for five years at $750K per year (current salary is $625K and UMass AD says it will be raised for the next coach) does it make a material difference from taking over a losing program and getting it to FCS playoffs at $250K per year? If you define the reward as the work, the challenge and the progress, you can have an equal reward at UMass at triple the salary for your family's security. There is so much room for improvement at UMass (transfer portal is one) it must make a turn around artist's mouth water.

Just a tough sell all around. Second to last in the country in average attendance (better than only Ball State). A roster that can't beat a decimated URI team, and probably can't beat UMAINE. That said - it would make for quite a story if any person can get this team back to .500 in a 4 year span.
Over the next 4 years I think they play 1 FCS team each year (e.g., Stony Brook, Merrimack, Wagner). They also play a number of MAC Teams. I'd say 5-7 or 6-6 in 2025 would get any Coach a nice payday at another job. Whipple was there 5 years in his second go around.

Even if an FCS head coach failed at UMass, it would get him "in the club" of FBS for many job opportunities. However I would see Chesney getting UMass to six wins and a bowl game. Fenway Park will be having a bowl game (global warming?) but it will be between ACC and AAC teams. Odds are good one team will wear maroon and gold for the Inaugural game.

The Fenway Bowl game will probably end up being the default landing spot for BC any time they win 6 games but don't get invited to a more prestigious bowl. The Eagles often get passed over for other ACC (and previously Big East) teams with worse records, simply because they've always had the reputation of not traveling well.

There lies the difference between the fan bases at BC versus those at Virginia Tech, NC State, UNC, Clemson and Florida State. Being a "small school" in relative terms also makes a difference when it comes to getting passed over. This was a big reason why BC managed to have a 9-year bowl winning streak earlier this century. They always ended up in games against less accomplished opponents as a result of falling down the selection latter.

One would think that BC would end up at Fenway this season even if they win out. Not traveling well would probably mean not traveling at all given this area takes Covid a lot more seriously than a lot of places.
Their league, relative to other Power 5 leagues, has a lot of weak sisters this year. If they had their qb all year, I think they'd have been close (but not at the top, they wouldn't have been THAT good) the top of their division.

Do we play them again soon or did Covid end the series for now? BC needed to face tougher competition than Colgate before the ACC.

9/9/2023 fbschedules.com/ncaa/boston-college/ From the HC perspective: Buffalo in 2022, BC in 2023, none yet in 2024, Northern Ill in 2025, none presently after 2025. BCs 2023 non-leaguers are pretty weak, wouldn't you say?
