The way things work in the world, this thorny issue will be tackled, unfortunately, after a violent death or life altering injury by a girl playing a male sport. Could have happened to a boy, but that won't matter.
If a girl gets hurt playing football, there has to be some assumption of risk on her part. I feel bad that anyone gets hurt, but you know that risk signing up.
I feel far worse for the girl that gets hurt by a collision with a guy while playing field hockey (or in this rare case against a guy playing girls soccer). No one signs up for a girls athletic team in a contact sport thinking they will be going up against guys
It does seem this comes up occasionally with FH. Men's FH is a popular sport in several European counties as well as India & South America. Often, not always, the kid involved or their family has some connection to the sport and there are few, if any options on the local level to play other than girls FH.

It's also just about the only sport that in this country is strictly female.
A rare non field hockey example: although not in the high school level, there was a thing a few years ago about guys wanting to get into the Olympics in synchronized swimming which is only a female sport in the Olympics. See attached video telling that story
Tom, I am not sure where you are getting this. Field hockey is played almost exclusively by girls, not boys.
Field Hockey is an Olympic sport though for Men and Women. The USA mens team has never qualified for the Olympics in any year they have NOT hosted iirc.

Once you go outside NYC and LI in New York STATE, for whatever reason Volleyball is almost exclusively a girls sport at the scholastic level. There may be other parts of the country where this is the case.
Obviously, there are pockets where boys volleyball is a very popular sport, like California.

I did not know that. It is definitely boys and girls in MA and NH. I don't know of a lot of schools that offer girls volleyball and not boys. I think there are plenty of schools, mostly smaller enrollments, that don't offer volleyball at all
