Talking with a fellow alum the other day, and knowing they drew 10k for Harvard, my guess was attendance might hit 15k if the weather was decent. And for the first home playoff game in 38 years, that was decent weather. It's Nov. 27, not Sept. 27! When I saw 4,136 I thought it was a type. Actually checked another site to make sure it wasn't. Embarassing. Don't care about the cash gate. High school students and kids should've got in free with an adult. HC must've known a home game was possible before last Sunday so NO excuses. Shows why the next AD hire MUST be a good one. Apparently no one on current staff is conscious. While the passion is much appreciated, you clearly dont follow attendance trends for FCS playoff games. These games have never drawn well anywhere outside of Fargo,ND. There are several reasons: 1) NCAA controls ticket sales so no "fudging" of figures 2) First round holiday weekend after Thanksgiving 3) Its cold in late November and early December 4) Relatively short notice of game locations and times. In the regular season, people have months and sometimes years to plan around their team's schedule. FCS playoffs is week to week.

It looked like a heckuva lot more in person as well. My math major, non-HC grad son (and therefore, more objective) thought there were many more than 4,000. The visitor stands were more full than any home game this year. While that's not saying much perhaps, they had their band and cheerleaders and a really good contingent that outcheered the Crusader fans many times. I would estimate more than 6,000 but as I indicated previously, we should go by the official number.
By the way, it was cold in case you didn't know.

One thing is for sure. People who were not there will claim they were years from now. Keeping my ticket stub just in case.

Take that haters!
UT Martin at Missouri State 5,072 Sacred Heart at Holy Cross 4,163 Which we know was bogus anyway. Florida AM at Southeast Louisiana 4,125 Northern Iowa at Eastern Washington 3,845 Southern Illinois at South Dakota 3,597 Incarnate Word at Stephen F Austin 3,448 Davidson at Kennesaw State 2,764

I actually bought my tickets while at the Hart on Wednesday for the hoop game and am probably one of the few people with an actual ticket stub to hold onto.

After I posted, realized that NCAA ticket policies were in force, so "specials" weren't allowed. And get the rule re: HS recruits. Larger point is that HC's idea of marketing is fluff stuff. If they aren't doing SERIOUS outreach, constantly, in the city and suburbs of Worcester, they are lost (which I believe they are). Granted, what they're offering in Hart ain't pretty, but wouldn't it make sense to build some kind of attendance base/interest when (?) things get better? The new AD should spend time with the WooSox to learn what works in Worcester.

This is the weekend you'll see the largest average crowds for this tournament; the two subsequent weekends are the beginning and end of exam weeks at most schools.

When you take the "art" away from the "science" of reporting attendance there's not much left. Probably all totals were actually higher with walk-ups but on an apple to apple comparison, HC and SHU supported their teams well on Thanksgiving weekend.

Did you get a sense if those were HC or SHU fans? Haha we lost our seats so we moved to the other side of the goal post HC fans in the endzone. Some hadn’t gone to games in a long time. Also some high school football players. Most crowded I have ever seen the endzone. With that said Sacred Heart traveled really well. If Harvard had 10k no way that had 4k

Some footage of that 1986 game on YouTube an interview with Gordie Lockbaum on Charter TV3 Starts at 6:20

Coker’s Catch the loudest Fitton Field has been since? All 4,000 of us 😂 Randolph-to-Harrison Hail Mary against Harvard in 2007. Also in front of a crowd of 6,000 greatly reduced by rain, Jimmy Thomas sacking Rob Curley on a 4th down bootleg to seal the Patriot League title in 2009. Saturday was louder than the latter. But that Harvard game was Homecoming, home opener with a very large contingent of rowdy students behind the bench.

My rough rule of thumb for Fitton Field capacity of 23,500. 4-5,000 north stands 12-13,000 south stands 5-6,500 east stands
If the south stands look 70 percent full, that's 8,500-9,000 in attendance.
And remember for the Harvard game, multitudes never entered the stadium but partied.

Great pic 1970!
Not to belabor the point, but the actual crowd (butts in seats) had to be at least 6k.
I’m not sure why they announced such a ridiculous number, but I think it must have to do with NCAA regulations.
Sad…who enjoys reporting a lower number of attendees?!? Not me!

Its always been like this. NCAA playoff crowds are always officially announced at 3 or 4K less than what the "eye test" would lead you to believe. Our playoff game at Villanova in 2009 was announced at around 4K when it felt like there were probably 7500 there. Same with the Monmouth game in 2019. Was a line like 40 min long just to get tix. Stadium seats 3800 and seemed like the place was basically full between the 15s. Announced at 2300 or something ridiculously low. We should be proud to have brought in the 2nd highest draw of all 8 outbracket games. Our good friend bfoley has a little egg on his face it would seem.
