Best wishes for good health to Coach Nelson. Will be interested to see who the acting head coach will be.. I'd think Coach Kennedy would be the logical choice. He has the most coaching experience..RJ may be the choice of heart, but he has limited experience...In any case, it will be a different voice..Interesting to see how see team reacts!

Does anyone know if the Basketball team will arrive in the Philly area on Friday in time to attend the Football game at Villanova?
I am very familiar with the physical location of each campus, and realize their proximity could be an issue.

More interesting to see how the team performs!
I certainly wish no one get Covid, although if I am reading this correctly, he himself might not have Covid. If the team is OK to play, leads me to suspect he got whatever exposure elsewhere, maybe family?

The basketball team hasn't heard the HC pep band in two years due to Covid indoor restrictions. I hope they get there and have a blast cheering. A great spirit infusion without having to hire a motivational speaker. Chesney is already on staff.đ I hope the band arrives, also.

What are the protocols with corona this season?
Every member of the team has surely been exposed to a positive testing Nelson, so are they supposed to go into quarantine as well?
Itâs hard to keep up with the corona rules these days.

Itâs hard to keep up with the corona rules these days. I think the general rule is that vaccinated people donât have to quarantine after an exposure to someone who tests positive.

Over the past two weeks, the number of HC staff positive tests and student positive tests are about equal. Monday and today (Tuesday) there were four staff positives and three student positives, with about 3,000 receiving test results. At least 96 percent of the staff and 96 percent of the students are vaccinated.
There was no college testing Wednesday-Sunday, over Thanksgiving weekend.
HC92 is correct about the general rule. Infected individuals are required to isolate; the college appears to have about 100 isolation beds. Given the very high vaccination rates, very, very few individuals are quarantined.
I expect the hoops team will now be tested more frequently than the twice a week frequency that has been in place since the start of the semester.
Worcester city, not the rest of the county, has experienced a sharp spike in positive cases over the past two weeks. A similar spike in HC staff positives may be a result of the community outbreak. 71 percent of the population ages 5 and older in Worcester have received at least one shot. That's comparatively low for Massachusetts cities.

So another example of a "breakthrough" case as Dr. Fauci would say? Wonder which vax Coach Nelson received.

Best wishes to Coach Nelson and all those staff and students that have been infected. Itâs going to be interesting to look back at this unfortunate period a couple years from now. I suspect that history will not look kindly upon isolating and locking down otherwise young and healthy individuals, especially athletes, whose chances of dying of Covid are about equal to getting struck by lightning. All we did was prolong the opportunity to reach herd immunity. Live and learn.

So another example of a "breakthrough" case as Dr. Fauci would say? Wonder which vax Coach Nelson received. There have been literally millions of âbreakthroughâ infections of the âfully vaccinatedâ at this point. Some detected via mass non-symptomatic testing and some not. (One should not confuse the term âbreakthroughâ with the phrase âhighly unusualâ or even the word âunusualâ). Heck, Princeton University just detected 40 Covid infections amongst its fully vaccinated student body via its mass non-symptomatic testing program. Probably leading to more lockdowns, masking, and isolation of those not at serious risk. FWIW.

So, Brett could go as long as he wore a mask? I'll be interested to see if the team plays any differently in the absence of the head coach. Not better or worse, just differently. Probably not.

He is fully vaccinated. And surely has a vaccine card to prove that. Beyond that, if the mask stops the spread, why canât Brett coach (masked)?

Part of the problem is not the face covering rule, itâs the lack of enforcement. I donât want to hear how ineffective masks are when 40% or more are wearing âchin jocksâ (copyright pending) as if they are all mouth breathers and nothing goes in or out of their noses.

I prefer the âchin diaperâ phrase. đ
So many of those âface coveringsâ are so porous (weâre not talking N95 or even surgical masks) it really makes no difference how they are worn.
Pretending for a moment that masks are highly effective at stopping the spread (and not just symbols and gestures), why canât Brett just don a mask and head to the game?

Some goals/benchmarks for tonight
Central Connecticut's program has struggled for many, many years, KenPom has the team ranked #305 or worse every year since 2014 (yes I know HC has struggled as well) including the last 3 seasons at #347 then #345, then #348 season to date. The defense is ranked #351 and is particularly weak defending 2 point shots--an area where HC's performance has been sub-optimal to say the least this season. Here are some reasonable numbers that I think could deliver a much-needed victory for HC
Two Point Shooting
Goal for HC: 50%+ ... CCSU's opponents have shot 56.5% on twos this year while HC has shot an unreal 41.7%. We must do better . We shot 48.8% on twos last season. I don't think Gerrale gates, our go-to guy, will ever be a high percentage shooter but 45-50% should be his percentage for the season. He is hitting at .385 in his limited play so far this season. He will get his shots off, no doubt, and we need him in that 45-50% territory and the team overall at 50%
Goal for HC Defense: Under 48% CCSU has shot 44.7% this year but HC's porous defense has allowed opponents to make 57.9% of their twos. We must do better and stop the uncontested opponent layups.
Three Point Shooting
HC Goal: 35% + HC has shot 34.2% this season while CCSU's opponents have shot 34.8%. So, we need just an "average" game, the expected outcome, here to meet this goal. We need to get Judson M some open shots and he will convert, If Bubba and Kyrell shoot anywhere near as well as they have season-to-date we will be in great shape here.
HC Defense Goal: 30% CCSU takes more threes than HC does. CCSU has shot 32% to date while HC's defense has held opponents to 33.3%.
Turnovers HC Goal: fewer turnovers than CCSU HC's turnovers to date have been mind boggling. With RJJ back at the point we have some hope that the situation will improve. CCSU turns over the ball a lot-not as often as HC has so far, but still a lot. A net advantage on turnovers would go a long way towards securing a win.
Rebounds Here's an area where HC may have an advantage versus CCSU. HC has grabbed 29.9% of its missed shots while CCSU has garnered 25.3%. On defense, HC has held opponents to 28.4% of offensive boards while CCSU's opponents have captured 33.2 % of their missed shots. HC Goal: Grab 33% of offensive rebounds and 75% of defensive rebounds
Free Throws HC Goal: make more free throws than CCSU
We can win if our young, and hopefully improving over the course of the season, team can reach these modest benchmarks against this very weak opponent.
