Tough time to become the HC AD. Men’s basketball is a dumpster fire. Women’s basketball is meh. Football is awesome but we’re on borrowed time before we have to search for a new coach. Neither hockey team is doing anything though there is some reason to be hopeful there. The Olympic sports have been awful since Beaven was a dorm. Talk order but, if he turns it around, he can write his ticket. Guys who did virtually nothing for us moved on to bigger jobs. It's a shame but all these cookie cutter rising stars need is a couple of years as an AD in D-1 to move up.

Maybe Holy Cross is like the song “New York, New York?”
If you can make it there, you can make it anywhere.

Have had some time to think more about this hire.
Pros:
- New England guy (Belmont Hill and Bowdoin alum) - Former coach and athlete -- I think the former is really important - Ostensibly knows how to connect with HC alums based on his background as a Mass. native - Having spent time in corporate relations, he knows how the sponsorship side of a college athletic department works - May know how to hire basketball coaches; Chris Jans (before he got sloppy at a bar and was making inappropriate advances at women) had a good first year back in 2014-15 (21-12) and Michael Huger has had some nice years since then, 106-91 (53-55)
Cons:
- Pretty much his entire career has been spent at schools that are not remotely close to Holy Cross in terms of size, athletics, alumni make-up, etc. (NC State and Bowling Green) - He was responsible for overseeing football at Bowling Green, and the two most recent football coaching hires there weren't great; Scot Loeffler is currently 7-22 (4-17) and before that Mike Jinks was 7-24 (5-14). Loeffler spent time at Boston College before Bowling Green, so maybe that was the connection for Hughes - This is his first "go around" and, as we saw with Blossom and Pine, things didn't work out very well with their maiden voyage - Despite being a Mass. native, he hasn't worked in the area or lived here in many years. Can he bridge the gap from the college to Worcester?
Hughes has a young family and is a Mass. native, so maybe he is looking to put down his roots here and not jump in three years to the next job.
Interestingly enough, this is the first colleges Hughes has worked at where there's been a men's lacrosse program. Being a lax guy, maybe he will figure out how to make our program good.
This could be a big few months for him if we are seeking to replace our football and men's basketball coaches.

Whoa!!! Has Brett been getting offers that I haven't seen? Saw all the stuff on Chesney here on Crossports but not Nelson.
