I like the DCA/CA construct. There are ways to figure out which sports to put in which bucket -- Revenue sports that pay for all or part of their existence is one way. Sports where you have a strong winning tradition or a natural advantage is another. And there are sports where you can get an increase in national recognition by winning. Examples of the third would include baseball and softball. The College World Series and WCWS both draw significant ratings on ESPN around the country and the PL is an automatic qualifier to both. Find a way to have a good year and you get a million viewers watching your team in the Regionals, frequently in a part of the country where HC isn't as well known.

The fact that HC has only won the PL title in baseball once in 31 years, IN A SIX-TEAM LEAGUE, is embarrassing.
To be fair, for much of the last 15 years we've been consistently in the top half of the league.

With the exception of women's lacrosse having a modicum of success from 2005-07, springs sports across the board at HC have been downright terrible for many, many years.
Can it be considered an embarrassment if not many even care?

Can it be considered an embarrassment if not many even care? And the baseball team had a nice little run from about 2010 - 2017 where it seemed like we were in the PL championship series against Army or Navy just about every year. Eliminating Nebraska in the Oregon St regional was one of the best HC sports moments we've had in the last ten years. But again, 1 Patriot League Baseball Championship in 31 years in a 6 team league is pretty darn embarrassing.

Especially for a school that is a former national champion and had a lovely stadium built for them by a now defunct independent league pro franchise. Why not invest in the team. Global warming should give us one more playable day in Worcester every five years or so.🙂 Let's Go!

Sadly, Baseball is treated like a D3 program, as it’s used to help enrollment, particularly from wealthy prep school families, who will be paying full freight. There’s enough evidence to show that winning is not the #1 priority

With the exception of women's lacrosse having a modicum of success from 2005-07, springs sports across the board at HC have been downright terrible for many, many years. Can it be considered an embarrassment if not many even care? Try this on for size: On March 27th, the Men's Tennis team beat Lafayette for the team's second win, and first D-1 win, of the year. A review of the Men's results dating back to the 2004-05 season shows this was also the team's first Patriot League win in that time-frame. Over the past eighteen seasons (including the current one) Men's Tennis has an overall record of 58-217 (.211), and a PL record of 1-52 (.019). The Women's team records over the same time-frame are: Overall - 96-183 (.344) and PL - 2-41 (.047). Collectively, our Tennis program is 154-400 (.278) and 2-93 (.031) over the past 17+ years. While the cost savings won't significantly move the needle, winning three-percent of our League matches over nearly two decades strongly suggests that it's time to pull the plug on this, and reallocate funding elsewhere.

How bad is Lafayette? Is there any place in the labyrinth of the Luth or the Jo where our players can practice year round under a coach able to develop skills? That could be an alternate approach to dropping the sport.

There’s enough evidence to show that winning is not the #1 priority We have D1 facilities. So clearly winning is not a priority. Thinking about another post, we are happy if they compete in the PL and make the playoffs. One ship in a 6 team league in 18 or so years is abysmal. But we accept that if they are competitive in the PL because we all want meaningful games at the end of the season. 5-10, 15-30, and now this year. When does Kit pull the plug on this experiment.

That could be an alternate approach to dropping the sport. There are plenty of indoor courts in Worcester County to practice at...that shouldn't be an issue.

There’s enough evidence to show that winning is not the #1 priority I'm pretty sure Holy Cross will do just fine continuing to attract wealthy prep school kids who pay full freight, with or without a baseball program. We may not be as selective as BC anymore but I don't think we're anywhere close to having a problem filling up classes.

I do not totally agree with a lot that is being said about our programs. The way I look at it is that every coach is FULL TIME with the exception of M/W Tennis an M/W Golf. All these programs with terrible records for years drive me crazy. Kit has to hold all these coaches to the same standard. Now I agree that some programs have higher standards. Saying that programs are treated like Division 3 is no excuse. These coached are being paid no differently than other employees. It is up to the AD to hold these coaches accountable. An AD needs to be able to determine which coach to hire, like Ronnie Perry did and believe it or not, Dick Regan. These programs have a lot more resources than 10-20 years ago......Willard=success.....Pearl=success...... Dizenzo=Success.... Comrie=success......Bob Lindsay=success, etc. These coaches have all the ingredients: x's and o's,player development, great recruiters, the ability to develop a game plan bases on opponents, etc. But the bottomline is recruiting. How does Pearl get Jon Landry to HC over Dartmouth and Brown or Tyler McGregor away from Yale.? He worked his ass off. It is called recruiting, selling the school and the program. The newer coaches get a little break. Maybe some like Track have a different objectives because of facilities. But coaches must be held accountable. Don't tell what you cannot do, tell me what you. It is up to Kit develop the standards. If changes are needed, make them and make sure to do your homework.
Being a coach is not easy, especially at HC. There are players out there. Go find them. Maybe they should double Chesney's salary so he can teach them "Recruiting 101"!! Enough said.

Marcus Blossom largely did not care about the smaller sports, and allowed them to flounder without batting an eye. Kit so far has been much more involved and is trying to elevate these programs. Hopefully he can find success in this.

Maybe they should double Chesney's salary so he can teach them "Recruiting 101"!! Enough said. There's some truth to this, but before you can hold a coach accountable to a winning standard you have to level the playing field. As I learned on this board, football and basketball are at, or nearly at the max scholarship allowance. Most of our "minor" sports are lucky to have any. Yes there are enough good full-pay student athletes in the country for any given sport to fill out the HC roster, but when you look at our ranking on the 2021 Forbes College Ranking (HC is #148), compared to other patriot league or high academic schools, you have to ask why you'd pay more to come here than Lehigh (#65), Colgate (#48), Lafayette (#68), Georgetown (#21), etc. when they're offering you as good an education, a similar or better Division 1 experience and maybe a bit of help with a partial athletic scholarship. And #148 puts us right behind California State University Northridge at #147 and one notch ahead of American University in DC at #149. 12 years ago HC was in the top 30 on this list. Apparently those days have past. I like the idea of holding the coaches accountable. I'd only suggest we hold the administration accountable first.

Maybe the #148 school was the (shudder) safety school for one or more applicants to the #21, 48, 65 or 68 school. God forbid.
Having winning sports teams may not automatically propel a college up the rankings, but there is no way that having an almost impossibly poor overall won loss record college wide contributes to climbing the rankings.
So improving athletics can be both a defensive as well as offensive initiative but is imperative either way.
