i don't think we'll ever be a physical, defensive juggernaut that owned the boards the way we were under rw. however, there is more than one way to overcome talent discrepancy and carmody proved that at princeton and northwestern (to a degree).
what this team - or better-equipped hc basketball teams in the near future - will be able to do is to shoot some teams off the court from positions 1 to 5.
right now, we have a major limitation at point guard (although benzan looked pretty good in the first half... he needs more of the pg minutes) and at center (although husek was decent against south carolina). this will likely be resolved in the next year or two. we are good now with ma, rc, and kc, but will need better and more consistent production from a number of other players. while i loved rw's style, we struggled to get the big bucket and shooting the ball in general most years which precluded us from getting over the hump in beating those goods teams with whom we were competitive.
i think the fact that we will be able to get the buckets we need in carmody's offense could potentially result in a higher ceiling. we will not need to defend as well as we did in the rw years since we will score more easily, but we do need to defend better. although the emergence of the 1-3-1 last year was encouraging.
i would love to see us hang with syracuse tonight, but it will likely take all of the following to do so: an uncharacteristically good game from at; the consistency that has been lacking from mh; and mz, cls, or someone else to provide some shooting spark off the bench.

Not worried about the offense at all. As offensively challenged players go, there are fewer and fewer on this year's team than we saw last season, so I think that bodes well. The PG position really worries me, and I don't see how this team can survive if AT and PB are on the court together for an extended period of time. More than anything though, the defense must improve. Is Joe Scott a defensive-minded guy? I hope so, because Carmody is not. Valid points, but as far as Carmody not being defensive minded, during our season ending run, our 1-3-1 looked pretty good.

Only one of the teams the 1-3-1 was successful against was ranked in the top half of D1 (#173), and then we played Oregon, who totally exposed us.

We are in the PL. That D, regardless of the opponents' rankings, won the 4 away games vs the same teams who beat us during the season. If that D succeeds against the PL, I am very satisfied. No D our personell plays will beat South Carolina or Syracuse.

Just as a reminder ...
The 2002- 2003 Holy Cross team took a trip to Allen Fieldhouse, were trailing by 18 at halftime and ultimately lost to Kansas by 24, 81-57.
I wouldn't take either of these early season games as great barometers of how the season will unfold.

Through the course of last year, both in and out of conference, the 1-3-1 was decidedly mediocre - until Eric Green was installed to play at the bottom, and we had both the speed and height to attack the corners and wings. Until Cohen is ready, I don't see anybody who can do what EG did for us at the end of last season - Ziggy is too slow, Ant is too small, and Benzan is both.

No D our personell plays will beat South Carolina or Syracuse. People railed against Milan for a system that was too personnel-centric, yet it sounds like we are going right back to the same type of formula (relying on shooting, relying on a special defender to hold the defense together, etc.) Carmody is obviously a better coach than Milan, but I find it quite ironic that we can now supposedly have a higher ceiling than when we consistently had one of the best defenses in the country because we want to start recruiting better shooters, despite showing no signs of being able to put together a defense than can stop good teams.

I don't know how CBC can be accused of not being Defense minded. His 1-3-1 baffled the PL in last year's tourney.

I don't know how CBC can be accused of not being Defense minded. His 1-3-1 baffled the PL in last year's tourney. It was a brilliant move that surprised and worked against four average-to-weak teams (highest ranked offense was 162) over a period of eight days. Until there is any indication that the 1-3-1 that worked over those eight days will translate into any type of sustained success, it is illogical to use that as a sample size, rather than a full year in which we were at the 12th percentile for defense in Division 1.

Only to nitpick Make that 5 average to weak teams over a two week period , the 1-3-1 also worked vs Southern in the NCAAs

During the Assumption game, Coach Scott seemed to be really amped up when the guys were on D.
As for offense, I know I've said it more than once, but I think the 30 second shot clock really hurts when facing these types of teams.

The 30 second clock certainly hurts our offense and speeds the game up, but it can slow down a fast tempo offense, thus helping our zones.

Thanks Chu. Their fans seem more civil online with their commentary than what I've witnessed live at games.

Don't want Ant throwing up a three immediately after we get an offensive rebound.
