Men: Today (or, alternatively, this coming Sunday, depending on the guidance of your Bishop) is the Solemnity of the Ascension. You know what to do.

Did it! 8:00 am. Mass said by Msgr. Pastor-Emeritus living elsewhere in the diocese. Assume pastor doing the 6:00 pm Mass. At 73, I brought the Mass average attendance age down.

It seems to me to be an increasingly difficult task. Most parishes I know of only have holy day Mass during the work day. Anyone working first shift has to go the night before. Back in the olden days, my home parish would have 7:00 AM, 4:00 PM, and 7:00 PM today (along with 7:00 last night). Today there is only an 8:00 AM (along with 7:00 last night)

Combination of fewer attendees and a LOT fewer priests, so the number of Masses on Sundays, holydays and weekday Masses all down.

Our local Church (Our Lady of Good Council) stopped the 7:20am Mass and two of the weekend Masses. During the week, they average about 28 people at the 8:45...all "cotton tops" as my brother-in-law says. At 76 and 74, my wife and I are two of the younger folks in attendance. One young mom does show up from time to time with her three young pre-schoolers. It is always great to see here there. She sometimes has her sister there with two more young kids. When it comes to future, I guess it is going to be "quality" over "quantity."

add Providence diocese, please. You know, the place where there are proportionately more Catholics than anywhere else in the country (not saying more practicing Catholics!).
