All would be true because at best he is a solid assistant coach which is a complement but he is not ready for college at the D1 level as a head coach When a young baseball manager is hired for his first post as an MLB Skipper, he often is paired with a wise older bench coach who has been a manager. Why rookie AD MB was allowed to hire another rookie as head coach for the (at that time) signature sport at HC, without a veteran head coach on the bench or a veteran AD, I'll never know.

This sounds great in theory, but how many former (good) head coaches are hanging around looking for an assistant job in the pL? And what do you think the budget to hire those coaches would be? There are 30 MLB teams and exponentially more former managers hanging around than there are new managers hired in any given year. Todd Golden was hired as the head coach at San Francisco at the age of 32. He hired a staff that included 0.0 head coaching experience. Three years later, he compiles a 57-36 record at USF, and is now the head coach at Florida. Many seem to have very unrealistic expectations for HC's place in the college basketball pecking order these days.

HC isn't at the top of the pecking order but I think it's high enough to stop having career assistants start their head coach learning curve at HC instead of at a lower level, especially if no mentor is available who has gone through the learning curve. I don't think HC valued the only D-1 coaching vacancy in the country high enough when Coach Carmody retired. They certainly could have instructed the search firm to select proven winners at D-2,3 to interview. If a winning HC program has a turnover and a key assistant is recommended by the current coach leaving in good faith under the provisions of his/her contract, that is different.

I disagree with the suggestion that many here are unrealistic about HC’s status in the basketball universe. No one is suggesting that HC should try to lure Bob Knight or Coach K out of retirement. Many are suggesting that we seek someone who has demonstrated head coaching ability (leadership, in-game coaching, recruiting, player development, etc) at the D-2 or D-3 level. It would not take a $1MM+ salary to land such a coach.

Formerly all women's Colby Junior College. Added Sawyer to distinguish itself from the other Colby in Maine when it went four year and/or when it went co-ed if I am remembering correctly.

Hiring someone who is a D2-D3 head coach to be the HC head coach is a different story than hiring a D2-D3 head coach to be an assistant coach at HC, as longsuffering was saying. "Demonstrated head coaching ability" should never be viewed as a requirement for a head coaching position at Holy Cross. The correct requirement is something along the lines of "possess the skills required to be a successful head coach." If Marcus Freeman falls to 0-13 as Notre Dame's head coach this year and they hire Bob Chesney to be their next head coach, should we completely dismiss the idea of Scott James taking over for Chesney because he has not "demonstrated head coaching ability." I think not.

Colby of NH was sued by Colby of Maine in 1974 and added Sawyer in 1975 to settle the suit. Good on Holy Cross of Worcester for never suing any other Holy Cross.😄

Just can't see any value whatsoever in playing these low end d3 teams.

Oh baby, the haters are going to be out in full force This is by no means my favorite schedule of all time, but several things are clear to me for why this design would make sense for HCBN: -Maximize home games -Build confidence in the team with W's (for a program that has not experienced many over the last 13 years) rather than taking on a bunch of guarantee games that sound fun but are sure L's -Allow a team with 5 newcomers (4 of which will need to contribute), and an almost entirely new backcourt the opportunity to gel in winnable games, ramping up for pL play I am completely OK with this schedule for this year as long as (1) we win the games we need to win (5-0 vs the D3's, CCSU, Stonehill, UNH), and (2) it leads to a successful pL run (minimum top-4 finish).

Just can't see any value whatsoever in playing these low end d3 teams. You can't see any value in getting wins under the belt for a team of players (and coach) with very few wins over the past couple years? I am typically all for the any time, any place, anywhere scheduling philosophy and rather lose to Duke and Kentucky by 40 than beat these team, but loaded up the schedule with sure L's at this point is probably not what's best for the program.

You can't see any value in getting wins under the belt for a team of players (and coach) with very few wins over the past couple years? This strategy (playing two non-D1s) last year didn't work. Maybe playing three this year would have been a better idea?

Seriously this is the schedule?
I don't understand how Nelson can look at his team and say that Dean and Colby-Sawyer are on the schedule- perhaps if early in the season- but one of them, not both.
If we win those two games-- I guess they count for the record book, but in my book, only one counts toward the 18-win season he should deliver to keep his job.

Neither should count. Pomeroy and the NCAA tourney committee do not count them. Kit never should have approved either one.

BBC- your ability to rationalize every action that HCBN takes is amazing, but we do have you on record for where the bar is set. If HC loses to, say, UNH I for one don’t want to hear the rationalization that “well you haters fail to recognize that Coach used that game to develop a backup point guard so the loss is really a plus “ or other customary justification for obvious failure.

I wouldn't count either as a win and the people who do the rankings like Sagarin, don't. I much prefer a 29 game schedule of D1 only games rather than this arrangement. It's a rip off to pay to see D3 games at the Hart Center and it's an embarrassment to the program.

The Stallions went 9-15 last year with signature wins over Elms, Rivier, Dean and Anna Maria (twice!!), while losing twice to Regis. I just threw up in my mouth.
