I wonder if and when they reached out to Merrimack and UMass Lowell, 2 D1 schools right in the ole back yard. Maybe they should start arranging the 23-24 schedule NOW.
Colby Jack, Tom Sawyer, James Dean.......was getting cataract surgery soon, but I might as well put it off - nothing to see here.

NAD, right up there with your Christmas poetry that we all look forward too. I suspect you'll have lots of material for Xmas '22. BBC, is it OK with you if we HATE the schedule and LOVE the coach?

OK, the schedule is out and most folks are now on the record about it. Whatever we feel will not change it one bit. Can we please now post about the actual team? I hate to see another seemingly endless stream of complaints (and defenses) about something that is now done. About as useful as a stream of posts about players who left the program years ago.

BBC- your ability to rationalize every action that HCBN takes is amazing, but we do have you on record for where the bar is set. If HC loses to, say, UNH I for one don’t want to hear the rationalization that “well you haters fail to recognize that Coach used that game to develop a backup point guard so the loss is really a plus “ or other customary justification for obvious failure. Never thought I'd see the day where you and Foley are both rooting on UNH to take down the Crusaders

And you have not seen that day, of course, as I am rooting for the Crusaders to win every game. I hope that st the end of the season you get to proclaim the loudest ever “I told you so” in Crossports history. I mean that most sincerely.

Maybe they should start arranging the 23-24 schedule NOW. This. Seems like everyone is doing it these days at our level (having one non-D1 on the OOC slate), but two for the second straight year is incredibly inexcusable. Part of Nelson's job description is rounding out the schedule and he's failing at it. Embarrassing. Thankfully, football should be able to keep us distracted from this program until January (hopefully).

Hey, I agree to back off the criticism - we do have 29 D.1 games - Many examples of D.3 games across PL schedules (from teams better than us) Army plays Keystone College (never heard of them) and Merchant Marine Aca BU plays Johnson & Wales (and Hartford which is somehow fielding a team this year while their coach sues the school) Bucky is playing Lebanon Valley Loyola has Washington Coll and Goucher Navy also plays Washington (still waiting for Colgate and Lehigh schedules)

Can’t wait for Caro’s post after the Dean game, which I imagine will go something like this —
“Dean is obviously not very good (to be kind), but you can’t watch this game and then deny that the HC roster is significantly better than it was when Nelson arrived.
Program is trending in the right direction through Game 2.”
That was largely BBC’s post above following the Regis game last season.

Formerly all women's Colby Junior College. Added Sawyer to distinguish itself from the other Colby in Maine when it went four year and/or when it went co-ed if I am remembering correctly. I'm glad HC waited until after they went co-ed before scheduling them

Seriously this is the schedule? I don't understand how Nelson can look at his team and say that Dean and Colby-Sawyer are on the schedule- perhaps if early in the season- but one of them, not both. If we win those two games-- I guess they count for the record book, but in my book, only one counts toward the 18-win season he should deliver to keep his job. I wouldn't count either as a win and the people who do the rankings like Sagarin, don't. I much prefer a 29 game schedule of D1 only games rather than this arrangement. It's a rip off to pay to see D3 games at the Hart Center and it's an embarrassment to the program. Another factor in the whether or not it should "count" debate. Not only Sagarin, but the other team doesn't "count" it in its record either

Even if we win these two games easily, I do not see how that prepares our team to play much stronger D1 teams, even in the PL. If either or both happen to be competitive or even a loss(es), that will have a clear negative effect. You cannot fool the team into believing those wins mean anything. If you want home games, schedule one D2 or strong D3, not two weak D3s. For the second game, schedule a solid D1 team away. It does not have to.be Kentucky strong.

To 'haze's point, it does seem like more and more of these games have popped up everywhere in recent years. I wonder why - does it have anything to do with the crazy roster shuffling from the transfer craze? Would be interesting to see what D1 opponents are either off or playing D-2/3s on the nights of the Dean/Colby-Sawyer games.
I just think with this roster you would want to play a non league schedule that is a bit tougher than the anticipated league schedule; not overwhelming. I don't look at this roster as particularly young; just haven't played much together (and many other teams are in the same boat). I mean - if Octave, Wilbar and Tse, with their backgrounds, need D-3 games to get ready for the PL, then the team is in big trouble anyway. Oh well, the players are not responsible, so I hope they make the best of it.

Playing a challenging, yet realistic, OOC slate would better prepare us for the PL. Regis and Vincent last year were boring scrimmages. The team probably would have been better off going through a hard practice against each other. Following the Regis game, we lost to BC by 30. Following Vincent, we lost to UNH by 15.

I agree 29 D-1 games has merit over 31 with two D-3s. The season injury risk just went up by 6% (Ky?) or so for one thing. But if Kit asked Brett to try to maximize the number of home games, I can empathize with Brett. It could have been exhausting trying to book two more D-1 home games. The attraction just isn't there for D-1 teams to travel and end up lowering their ranking. Win and they will come.

Neither should count. Pomeroy and the NCAA tourney committee do not count them. Kit never should have approved either one. Agree. Kit should have scheduled Bowling Green at the Hart. Hard to say who was the bigger proponent of filling out the home schedule with D-3s, Brett or Kit. We also don't know if D-1 road games were available and if so who nixed them in favor of D-3 home games.

anyhow. . . official opener 8 weeks from yesterday. Probably only scrimmages pre season with no open exhibition.
Parents weekend is Oct 29. Not a bad time to schedule an open practice

I assume we didn't schedule Assumption and/or Nichols because we would be outfanned (new word!) and outcheered in the Hart by their students. At least the Hart would have been packed.

Just for the record Colby-Sawyer has two players listed at 6-6

There are basically THREE non D1 teams - Dean and Colby-Sawyer along with the first year D1 transitioning Stonehill. This schedule is very weak. It really further points out that the glory days of Holy Cross men's basketball are ancient history.

Glory days, perhaps, but with the right moves, we are two years away from respectability. Only takes two legitimate 2+/3 star players, or a good point guard and a transfer big away from being ok again.

"Ancient" is in the eye of the beholder but it has sure been awhile.
But here's the thing, look at for example, Villanova football. They literally dropped the sport entirely and yet they brought the sport back from zero to national champs in FCS. I would think that with the right leadership that it would be a LOT easier to bring back a sport with 15 or fewer players than one with 90 players.
I know, I know, it "starts at the top." That means making wise choices for head coaching and the financial resources necessary to succeed. That might also mean taking some lumps playing away games against good/great teams to help get our name out there. Playing D-2 & D-3 teams isn't going to do that except very locally. Our facilities for training are excellent and while some complain about the Hart for game experience, for now at our level, it's fine and if we need it, the DCU is generally available for a big-time opponent. We just haven't needed it.
It CAN be done.

Do you mean to say we could wait to see what they actually do on the court before forming an opinion? Careful there, longsuffering. You are using facts and logic on Crossports. That sort of thing can get you into trouble here.

Isn't that the story of sports? A group who weren't great in other configurations come together in a new one and shine? HC has the same chance as every other gerrymandered roster to put things together.
Coaches who struggle and then find their footing? Another sports story as old as the first caveman throwing a rock to his Neanderthal buddy.
Again, it's not a likelihood but I'm saying we have a chance.
