By my math -- 21 signings during the December signing period. 22 -- Sean Woods expected to sign next week. 23 -- Wood (Transfer) 24 -- Castro (Transfer) 25 -- Rosenberg 26 -- Hopkins 27 -- Crocetti How many roster spots are left? I figure it can't be more than 2 or perhaps 3 at the most. Am I wrong? At least 3, likely 4 and as many as 5! With the players back on campus the returning roster is less guess work.

I was thinking the same thing newadvisor. From personal experience at HC, moving from a 2 point edge rush to an every down DE in 3 point is extremely difficult and takes about a year to really get acclimated. My hope is that with Dansdill’s strength, speed and athleticism he could provide pressure from a 2 point in 3rd and long type situations as soon as this year. I’d love to see him at ~250 by fall 24’ if/when he makes the full transition to an every down DE. Edit: My first post said Ross, mean’t to say Dansdill*. Hopefully Ross near 100% recovered from his ACL injury come spring ball. Full contact reps probably still limited though just to play it safe cause he will need a big summer to get ready physically to move into a potential starting role at DE opposite BV. Where does Robinson fit or is he a year or two away? IMHO, Robinson will see snaps as a freshman. Potentially comparable to what BV saw last year as the #3 DE but maybe not as early in the season. He’s one of the most college ready commits in the class (maybe second only to Drew Spin) and that’s not easy as a DL.

Lacking all of your experience and in-depth knowledge I've also felt that on fefense more than one DB will see solid action, mostly because we need a lot of help there and we have some good players coming in. Woods will be an automatic as a xfer. Not counting special teams guys and returners.

Jones or Mills (if we get him) would be the most ready physically but both played more offense than CB in HS and will need a year with Barnes/James on technique + football awareness/IQ before they are really ready IMO. Plus, you return Haskins and Spence at CB. A frosh safety would be more likely to get run IMO with all the turnover and lack of returning players with experience. ”Woods will be an automatic as a a xfer” I don’t follow on this…are you referring to Sean Woods?

I think he's referring to Jon Wood - transfer DB from SHU. I think he will be on the two deep, not sure beyond that.

The Wood v Woods similarity of names will probably be with us for a while.

What’s the chance Midwest they put Petersen at DE if he’s fully back from surgery? He was super productive in HS playing DE. Just a thought in case we end up short at DE.

It’s a great question I hadn’t really given much thought too. I think the odds would be very slim just given that being a productive HS D-end and then not playing any snaps there for over almost 3 years would be a huge ask. Plus, after Morris we are not very deep at TE. Lane got some valuable experience last year but that’s it.

Sorry I did mean Wood, the DB xfer, I think will play for sure. Playing so many safeties and not thinking we're particularly deep at CB, with injuries and whatever, Jones, Comestro, hoping Mills, someone will see action. With no ability to evaluate technical development, reading plays, I suppose I'm I being too optimistic one of those presumed frosh or even Jones might make it into some action. Jones I thought was a straight safety, a hitter, well regarded in a pretty good program. Thanks for all of your earlier insights on these players

Thanks for all of your earlier insights on these players I know we are still getting used to names but Cam Jones was a CB in HS and likely one at HC. I think you mean Wood for your last couple thoughts that the SHU transfer is a pure safety and pretty good hitter. He’s also probably 21 years old which helps.

Yes Smith and Wood are very similar style safeties. Both ~5’10 180 and can hit. Might both be at WS and interesting battle in camp?! Edge would obviously start with Wood having played college ball for 3 years and getting looks this Spring.

It takes a lot to come in and play as a Frosh but I personally believe you will have 5-6 Frosh on the D 2-deep and 2 Frosh on the O 2- deep this fall. This is a talented class.

Based on film only, We might be replacing some experience and strength on the two deep/roster with a bit more quickness and speed

It might take younger players some time to build to the level of strength we have and had on the roster. But that is what a HC strength program will provide in the weeks ahead

I will say that while we may not be totally there yet, we are fast approaching the "reloading" rather than "rebuilding" mode in football.

I'm curious how you're considering Christian Ross who I think was 2 deep as a frosh before the immediate injury. He's officially a soph but effectively another frosh. It's really an excellent class that complements the existing talent and depth.

I considered him a Soph despite him having 4 years of eligility because he will certainly get a 5th year if he wants it.

Great job by all our sleuths out there. Question: When someone says “coach set out a smoke signal“ about an imminent commitment what does that mean? Does he post something on the website, tweet, or something else?
