I was fortunate enough (and old enough) to see Russell play against Wilt at the old Garden.

1955 Holiday Festival: Bill Russell leads the San Francisco Dons to victory over the Tom Heinsohn led Holy Cross Crusaders. He was a great player but more importantly was a great man.

I was fortunate enough (and old enough) to see Russell play against Wilt at the old Garden. Same here 68 playoffs. I too was fortunate to see Bill play several times against Wilt, at Convention Hall in Philadelphia. Those were the days when you could get a ticket on the floor for less than five dollars. Boy do I miss the intensity that those two brought to the rivalry.

I saw Russell play in person also. It was when my CYO team played at halftime of a Sunday afternoon Celtics game at Boston Garden. We had floor seats behind the basket nearest the Celtics bench.
I remember having a chance for a layup, but losing control of the dribble which was my signature move.

On the topic of mentoring and the impact it makes on both mentees and mentors, the following commentary on the passing of Boston Celtics legend Bill Russell crossed my desk. I believe our 90-Wide family and our entire Crusader family would appreciate it so I welcome sharing. MENTOR co-founder, board member, and close friend of Bill Russell, Geoffrey Boisi, made the following statement:
“William F. Russell, Jr. was an incredibly important leader in the mentoring movement. Because of his dignity, intellect, wisdom, and life experience as well as his stature as a truly respected American social justice and athletic icon, his voice, as to the needs of children of all backgrounds, carried immense weight and inspiration.
He believed deeply that adults in America, individually and collectively, had a responsibility to raise our children to be people of integrity and character who would treat each other with honesty and mutual respect.
He thought we should provide our kids with a quality educational experience that would instill in them the tools to become economically self-sufficient, independent thinkers and active positive contributors to society according to their innate talents.
He believed in the importance of self-respect, the power of we, meritocracy, and constructive competition. He was beloved because he believed in the dignity of man no matter your race, religion, or economic circumstance and he walked that talk.
It has been a privilege to have him as a founding board member of MENTOR. He often reminded us that he viewed his work on behalf of children as an important part of his legacy. His friendship, infectious charismatic personal style, generosity of spirit, time and impact, were precious gifts for which we are eternally grateful.
Rest in peace dear friend and may his memory and values continue to inspire us.”

Bill Russell must have had a good sense of humor because he had that great cackling laugh. In fact there are even videos of him laughing on YouTube. My favorite was the tv commercial that he did (I’m thinking it as for A T & T) with Ronnie Watts a backup center who played briefly for the Celtics when Russell was player-coach. Watts says “it can now be revealed for the very first time that I was the real brains behind the Celtics success”. It might have been unscripted because Russell exploded with that signature laugh. As an aside, medical science has no explanation for why I can remember a commercial from 50+years ago but can’t recall where I parked my car 20 minutes ago.

Whatever the reason, i suffer from the same thing...I think. That's ok. I found my self whistling the Woody Woodpecker theme song the other day. I'm concerned.

Has to be really hitting the Cooz hard. While I'm sure there are role players I'm forgetting, Cooz and Satch Sanders are the only household names I can think of that are still alive from those Auerbach coached championship teams. Maybe Don Nelson, but I think of him as the next generation

Satch Sanders lives out here in the Sturbridge area..I see him on occasion in different settings, not hard to miss him...He and his wife gave "Letter Jackets" to the Southbridge HS boys basketball team players a number of years ago, he was a spectator at many games...Not sure of his connection to the team...
Cousy's "Last Pass" is sitting in my to read pile, I'll have to move it to the top...

I remember Nelly saying he knew Red had confidence in him because while he often didn't start he was generally in the game at the end.
