www.npr.org/2022/08/04/111560718 c8/remembering-celtics-legend-bill-russell Tremendous interview conducted by Terry Gross on the Fresh Air program with Bill Russell, originally broadcast in 2001. The interview re aired today on the NPR stations that carry the program. I found the interview insightful, particularly his relationship with Wilt Chamberlain. His story regarding Thanksgiving Dinner provided a dimension that as fans or both men and their teams, one may have not thought. Definitely worth listening.

Nice to see him honored in this way.
I Was a fan of his Celtic teams and loved to watch his game (along with the Cool, of course). I did not know some of those ugly things that were.done to him until very recently. I have to ask if all of the NBA retiring his number make him hoop parallel to Jackie Robinson? IMHO it does, but that may just be me.

Agree about those Celtics teams. I was a Celtics fan in the sixties. I try not to compare. There is only one Jackie. However there is only one Bill Russell. Each in his own way....

Russell and Robinson were great players but to me their number retirements were for bigger reasons than on-field/court play. Gretzky and Jordan were great players but they didn't break societal barriers (first black player and first black head coach) like 42 and 6 did.

Jackie Robinson was not a "GOAT" based on his playing abilities. A great player, indeed, but not in the running for GOAT. His fame, and value, transcends his substantial abilities on the field. And, there's no one outside of Massachusetts that would rank Orr above Gretsky, or a handful of others, for that matter, as the GOAT of hockey.

Once upon a time I read an article about sports myths. One of the myths this article tried to debunk was that Gretzky was the greatest hockey player ever. Most people point to Gretzky's prolific scoring. This article claimed that Lemieux was a better scorer. The logic used was that Gretzky played in a high scoring era. They provided stats that showed Gretzky's goal production at his peak as a percentage of all the goals scored in the NHL and also the goals scored by his own team. Lemieux had fewer goals but mostly played at a time when scoring wasn't as high as Gretzky's peak years. Lemieux was scoring a higher percentage of all NHL goals and also a higher percentage of his team's goals. Basically, compared to what everyone else was doing, Lemieux was scoring at a marginally better clip than Gretzky.
Oh, ya. And also I'm from Massachusetts

Injuries derailed the career of Bobby Orr but he was hands down the best player I ever saw. He controlled the game from the blue line with his skating ability and took numerous shots to the knees as he was going around opponents whose only defense was sticking their leg out. Unfortunately in his era knee surgeries were very invasive and generally shortened careers.

This interview with the great Bob Cousy brought tears to my eyes. Never in my life have I enjoyed a dynasty as much as I enjoyed those Celtics teams of the '50's-60's.
