I guess I don’t understand what the purpose of Foleys comment is. Yes - there’s a chance he doesn’t enroll - he’s a verbal commit. That same chance occurs with 100% of the players who verbally commit. What’s the purpose of the comment. Everyone understands that. What are you trying to accomplish? Well, there is a high chance of a coaching change in the spring. That is the easy reason. The jury is still out on that question. I’m not a huge fan of Nelson, but give the devil his due on recruiting. Luc was a home run, and Nugent looks pretty solid. Yes, Nelson has lost some good kids to the portal; but he’s picked up some pretty good ones too. The portal is starting to look more of a two way street and may not be as bad as it looked a few years ago. This is a make it or break it year for him. He’s got to be significantly better than .500 in PL play, or he’s likely to be shown the door. I think the guys will be better than most here expect, but I’m always optimistic going into the season. Good luck to Joe!

Guess I was wrong about no one with other good options committing until something changes at HC. Good for the staff. Welcome, Joe! Crazy to think that things might not actually be as bad as they are in the Crossports Hater Echo Chamber Welcome, Joe! Go Cross Go!

No they won’t. He will sign and stick with HC. Typically what happens is that if a coach is fired or leaves the school, then that school will grant the incoming player a release. It's up to the incoming coach to "re-recruit" the player. Obviously, you hope and think Joe is a smart enough kid that he is selecting the school and not coach, and will honor his commitment regardless whether Nelson is here or not in 2023.

Welcome Joe! For that last slot, I would like to see either a rugged 4 man (to replace GG), or a good lead guard. The Joba kid would seem to fit your description of a 4 man very well. It also looks like the kid can shoot which reminds me of what RW used to say about the value of a stretch 4. I would put a full court press on getting him.

It looks like he can shoot - can he play defense?
We all loved Martindale when he signed - sounds like Nugent is similar on the offensive end - hopefully his defense is better than Judson's

I have had the misfortune of being a Knicks fan for decades superseded only by my admiration & love for the Cousy-led Bill Russell Celtics teams coached by the great Red Auerbach from Brooklyn ,NY. This is one of the Knicks keys to interminable failure. (90's Knicks were good.)Almost every time the Knicks signed a new victim-player there was a rumble. For example, the guy can shoot but he can't create. He's a scorer but can't shoot the trey. He can pass but can't shoot. He can score but can't defend. in other words he can do this but can't do that. The greatest, Red Auerbach was able to build on the varying strengths of his players to create the most successful teams in NBA history. Was the great Bill Russell a great outside shooter? Was Cooz a great defender. Did Tommy gun ever pass? ETC. Yet Coach Auerbach selected players whose skills he could blend into greatness. Coaches regularly build not obsessed with weaknesses but build on the strengths. Coach Nelson will have to do it for HC to win.

Oh, you mean "synergy" where the coach gets more from his players than their individual skills?
Haven't seen that in the Crusader men's basketball team in some time. But isn't that what any and all coaches are supposed to do rather than just "roll the ball out there?"

He could defend, rebound and out-tough opponents. He played under Heinsohn, not Auerbach but was a great role player who supported the outside shooters like JoJo White and Hondo.

NERR has a nice write up on Joe Nugent committing to HC. Tabor Academy & Middlesex Magic forward Joe Nugent announced his commitment to Holy Cross earlier this week. Nugent had a standout season this past year for Tabor. He averaged 22.3 points and 8.7 rebounds, leading the Seawolves in both categories. His performance led to him earning All-NEPSAC Class A and All-ISL First team honors. Nugent played in the Under Armour Association for Middlesex Magic. He was an integral piece on a team that finished 18-3 in UAA play and 34-4 overall for the spring/summer. Nugent led the UAA in EFG% on jumpers per Synergy Sports. “We talk to our guys about the importance of doing things in a way that leads to them having good choices with success not coming by accident,” said Tabor head coach Coke Whitworth. Joe has worked extremely hard for many years at this game and consequently, he and his family/support system did things that led to some nice choices for him.” “I think he fits in very well with what Coach Nelson and his staff are building at Holy Cross. Very selfishly, I am excited I get to go watch him play and know his family and friends are as well.” “Joe Nugent is undoubtedly one of the finest shooters in Middlesex Magic history,” said Middlesex Magic head coach Michael Crotty. “He is 6’6, has great mechanics and his movement, footwork, and shot preparation are fantastic. Joe shoots at extremely high clips off screens, off the dribble, and in catch and shoot situations.” “In addition to his shooting, he is a great rebounder with motor and competitive fire. Joe was our leading scorer on a team that went 34-4 (18-3 on UAA) and won the UAA Spring championship! We are extremely proud of Joe and believe he has the chance to step in right away at Holy Cross and have an outstanding career.” Nugent becomes the first member of Tabor’s 2023 class to finalize their college plans. He is now the third member of Middlesex Magic’s 2023 class who has committed to play for a division one school.

NERR has been releasing its rankings by state for returning players in New England. Joe Nugent checks in at #8 in Mass. There are now nine D-1 programs in MA. Getting a top eight player puts us ahead of the game. Eat your heart out Stonehill. I like the scoring average as a junior. There is a trend I've noticed, more in WBB but also MBB of recruits with low scoring averages, sometimes single digits, which makes me apprehensive. A D-1 recruit, no matter their other specialty such as PG, or rebounding should be able to put the ball in the basket against high school defenses.

Probably just me but these rankings mean virtually nothing to me.
1. These are inherently subjective - beauty is in the eye of the beholder 2. If they are somehow accurate/objective, HC is so poor that in a small 6 state local region, we couldn't get anyone in the top 10, much less top 5? How is UConn and BC doing in these rankings? Tells us something about our basketball program. 3. Or, while not very likely, our coaching staff are geniuses and know #18 is better than many in the 17 notches above him.
All that said, I hope he does well and is a factor in improving our dreadful results on the court.

From what I have read about New England Prep Basketball, it is very highly ranked in terms of how it is viewed nationally. Most if not all of the top ten players in New England generally go to a Power 5 program. Also, the NERR rankings don't yet include kids who enrolled in September so Nugent is likely to drop in the rankings.

Kids around #18 tend to go to schools like HC. Batchelder was #19 last year. Kids further down the list sometimes go to higher levels, but those kids are usually 6’10”+. As someone pointed out, kids may get added to the list which will impact final rankings.
