I am sure he meant he wanted more Jesuits and a larger building! He was shocked how few and how small! 😉 At the meeting of the Planning Commission, a commissioner had to explain to a commenting member of the public who the Jesuits were. ---------------------- One of commenting public, I can't remember which one and I don't want to malign, asked what would Holy Cross do with this building when the Jesuits were down to 2 or 3, -- turn it a student residence? [Along the lines of a partying fraternity.]

Do the fraternities which do not exist at HC really party? Where are the men of Animal House when a college really needs them?

As a public service to the readers of Crossports, I listened to the public hearing, and the numerous public comments. ... 4.) The College ought to map how many students are living off-campus in this neighborhood. Some of the neighbor complaints likely relate to student behavior at off-campus residences. One individual said she owns several properties on College St. I'll make a bet one of them is rented to students. Similar to the earlier comments about people living next to an airport complaining about planes, the neighborhood should be thankful that students are occupying decrepit housing for 8-9 months per year, as opposed to the alternative of who else may be willing to pay rent for those places. ... 5.) Caro St., thankfully, has calmed down! BOOOOO

Planning Board met last evening (Sept 21) and unanimously approved the project. Most significant change was to remove the front door on Kendig St. The property will be fenced at the traditional campus boundary, and the only entrance will be from the main campus by the Hart. The fire department is requiring an emergency vehicle gate where Kendig St. extended intersects with the road that circles the Luth complex. The gate will be siren-activated.
The college had a Community Alliance meeting on Sept 8th, to address neighbor concerns related to construction of the townhouse residence halls, and these apparently were resolved. The meeting also included neighbor comments on Kendig St. parking and access. This was the first Community Alliance meeting since the onset of the pandemic, and the suspension of these community meetings contributed to the venting of issues at the previous planning board meeting on this project, and which were unrelated to the new Jesuit residence.
An anecdote about student parking on Kendig St. in the glory days of the Hart. At the previous Planning Board meeting, an elderly Kendig St resident recited the tale of calling for an ambulance for her ailing father. It was a snowy, winter evening, and the ambulance was unable to reach the house because of cars parked on both sides of Kendig street. An announcement was made at the Hart asking fans to please move their cars, but no one did. The fans who had parked their cars had to jump the fence that marked the college's property line, and the very end of Kendig St. which then, as now, is a private way where the dirt road ends with trees and shrubs. I'd say that tale is at least 20 years old.
Given the Board's approval, i expect construction to start fairly soon, and hopefully be complete by next summer. That would allow the college to start the conversion of Ciampi into a student residence hall before the start of fall semester, 2023..

We seem to be doing lots of major construction before the release of what’s supposed to be a campus master plan.

Is this "unplanned" expansion?

A new Jesuit residence on Kendig St. was planned pre-COVID. Fr. B. announced to the College staff that construction was being deferred because of the financial hit that resulted from closing the campus mid-semester. In this image, the two houses at the top of Kendig nearest the Hart parking lot are owned by HC, and I am fairly certain that the residence was originally to be built on the lots occupied by these two houses. However, more recently, Madison Properties bought lots across the street, where the trees were cut. And the new residence will be built on the Madison Properties lots, across Kendig St. from the two houses that HC owns. HC owns the entire right side of Avon St., which is forested. HC and a natural gas pipeline company own the left side of Avon, also forested. The one modest house near the foot of Avon is privately-owned. The modest house below it is on Davenport St. HC has preserved for future use (land-banked) the two houses on Kendig which are contiguous with the properties on Avon. The house on Kendig whose roof can be seen in the tree-cutting photo is hidden in the image above by a clump of trees. It is owned by an elderly woman. The image also shows the only house on the south side of City View not owned by the college. It is the last house on the right, next to the parking lot, and across from Ciampi. Just below Ciampi in the image is the only house on the north side of City View not owned by the Collage. ------------------------------------- Speaking of the Jesuits, a recent email to alumni was signed by Andrew J. Garavel, S.J. Superior, Jesuit Community Fr. Garavel was recently appointed to the HC BoT. However, he is not listed among the members of the Jesuit community at Holy Cross. Moreover, Fr. Garavel is listed as a professor at Santa Clara, and a member of the resident Jesuit community at Santa Clara. (His photo shows him wearing a shirt and tie.) My questions, what is the difference between the Rector of a Jesuit community, and the Superior? (At Santa Clara, Fr. Garavel is sub-ordinate to the Rector.) In essence, is Fr. Garavel a "Superior" in absentia? Why would not the Rector of the Jesuit community at HC send out the November email?

Gray construction trailer marks construction site. Ciampi and Jesuit garage at image right. Dark red house on City View is privately owned. White house in distance on Kendig is owned by Holy Cross, and will be across the street from the new Jesuit residence. Yellow posts mark a natural gas pipeline.

PP, any idea when Sasaki plan will be released? My purely speculative guess is in about a week's time, in conjunction with the President's Council meeting. If not then, I have no idea. They need to start re-constructing the Easy St. dorms by next Fall, and I believe if there is a new residence hall by Polar Park, that is supposed to start construction in 2023. In any event, they need to identify, sooner rather than later, what student housing will be available and where for the fall 2023 semester. ---------------------------- From the moved PCPA webcam this morning, the contractor is excavating for the new Jesuit residence, and a long tractor trailer is unloading building materials. Also, there is another trailer being unloaded at the front entrance of Luth, with goodies for either Luth or the Hart. The loading docks for Luth are on the south side of the complex, so these goodies must be for strength / conditioning, or the court/rink, on the north side of the complex. (P.S., the trailer was from Canada, so the goodies were from Canada as well.)

Perhaps, the endowment news and Sasaki's campus master plan will be released by this weekend.
