I'm not so sure about that. My unscientific observations having gone to virtually every HC-Harvard game at Harvard Stadium the last 20+ years is that the Harvard student and alums are much like Holy Cross students and alums: Alums are more interested in the game and know the history of the series and the importance/lack of importance of a particular game; the students, no where near as much. Others might have a different opinion.

Both teams come into the game with no more than one loss, and tied for first, the game will draw 15 k plus. Parents/families will get students into the seats and I believe the Worcester community will come out for the game

Anybody know what the total paid attendance needs to be for football to break even-without pay games, CAF, and Momentum campaigns?
can football become a profit center for the athletic program vs cost line in the budget?

Great idea, but wonder about the level of student engagement and noise levels. The school might need Crossports posters to be in the crowd? LMAO Too many would be in Dinand oblivious of the fact that there was a football game that day. Good one efg72.

Anyone know what the Fitton Field attendance record is for a PL game? Wondering if it will be broken next month, whatever it is.

I don't think the math is there/ Even if HC drew 20,000 fans paying $20 each to 5 games a year that would generate only $2.4MM and 60 scholarship equivalents a year come to over $4MM. That doesn't include staff salaries and other operating expenses.

ESPN would never have a game day with a half empty stadium, no matter how many influential alums we have.

No sure any Harvard folks particularly care about the HC-Harvard football game. BUT, if we are undefeated and near the top of the rankings and Fordham has moved even higher in the rankings (with just their wild FBS loss) I can see an argument for game day in Worcester October 29. DeMorat v Sluka. Fordham game certainly looking like "the one" given that our matchup with Colgate in Hamilton was so early in the year. And with our 35-10 win, last year's #2 team in the league has effectively been check-mated from PL auto-bid competition not even a week after the fall solstice. Fordham doesn't typically travel well (unless it's to West Point or maybe Ireland) but in recent years HC has showed it can fill Fitton with a 10K-ish range crowd late in October and into November. I expect Fordham game to draw around 11K with good weather given that it's Family Weekend and in all likelihood for all the marbles in conference. I'm definitely interested to see Fordham's game results between now and then. Will the defense gain some swagger against the likes of Georgetown and Stony Brook? As of now I'd say Fordham has not just a G5-level offense but a very good G5-level offense. And a bad FCS defense. Our offense will likely have to perform like it did in the 2nd half at Buffalo to stay on top of the Rams. There's a chance DeMorat will go absolutely nuts against Georgetown and Stony Brook and that'll help draw some fannies to the seats at Fitton. (Beyond all the other HC-related reasons.)

Unfortunately, DeMorat could throw 10 TDs in those games and because he’s FCS QB, he’s not going to be a Flutie-like draw.

Tim Murphy just on Bloomberg plugging the game as the Bloomberg Boston affiliate is covering it. A couple quotes “best Holy Cross team I’ve seen on film in my ~40 years as a coach”. Lots of praise for talent, facilities and HCBC. “ “About The only thing they haven’t accomplished in the past 3 years is beat us so we know we are going to get their best”. But implicitly hinted being Harvard they get everyone’s best…
Sounds like he’s trying to talk us up but is confident in his team.

I am anything but a Harvard fan.....however one must concede that the Harvard football coaching legacy has had an amazing run. I recall the headlines in the Boston Globe as a young boy when the John Yovicsin led Harvard 11 "Beat Yale 29-29" in the famous 1968 game coming back from a 29-13 deficit with only 42 seconds left in the game. Yovicsin was followed by Joe Restic and now Murphy, the all-time winningest Ivy League coach. Three coaches in 65 years. Hopefully Coach Murphy will NOT be walking across the field around 4 pm Saturday with a smile on his face.

Quite a treat playing at Harvard stadium in front of a large crowd. I hope the boys get that experience this Saturday. Lots of motivation going into this one.

So that must be the Bloomberg national radio network or national (international?) Cable TV channel. That's impressive reach for Holy Cross discussion. Can't think of another component of HC getting that coverage.

Yes it was the national syndication with Tom Keene, Lisa Abramowitz and Jonathan Farro who I listen to or watch almost every morning. A couple million in the audience between TV and radio (Sirius XM is how I was listening) would be my guess.

theanalyst.com/na/2022/09/fcs-football-preview-and-predictions-week-5-games-of-the-week/No. 10 Holy Cross (4-0) at Harvard (2-0) Kickoff: 1 p.m. (ESPN+) Notable: Harvard gained four turnovers while winning last year’s matchup on the road 38-13. Crimson RB Aidan Borguet has opened his senior season as the Ivy League’s leading rusher (36 carries, 258 yards, three TDs). Holy Cross, which is riding its highest national ranking since 1991, is 17-4 since the spring 2021 season, including 7-0 when QB Matthew Sluka rushes for 2+ TDs and 13-1 when he throws for a TD. The Pick: Holy Cross

I just rewatched our 2018 game at Harvard Stadium (on Stadium). Great comeback, but a 34-31 loss, on a FG with no time left on the clock is still heartbreaking. To have a pick-me-up I rewatched Coach Chesney's "welcome" press conference. From day #1 he had "it" going for him. If we win this weekend, he will be the first reason why. GO CROSS GO

The IL-PL championship game is small potatoes for this storm. It has the ACC weekend to ruin first.

NE Football Journal with good coverage of their "Game of the Week" College: Holy Cross preparing for biggest test of the season with Harvard Posted By Kevin Stone on September 29, 2022 Through its first four games this season, Holy Cross has made it look relatively easy – except for the Hail Mary against Buffalo – while jumping out to a 4-0 start. This weekend will be the biggest test yet for the No. 11 Crusaders when they travel to historic Harvard Stadium for a matchup with the 2-0 Crimson. Head coach Bob Chesney and his team lost to Tim Murphy’s squad at home (38-13) last season and a similar fate this weekend wouldn’t completely derail the program’s ultimate goals, but would surely but a damper on what has all the makings of a special season. One big thing the Crusaders can fall back on this weekend is how successful the program has been on the road over the last couple of years. “I think it’s a couple things,” said Chesney during his Tuesday availability. “When you get in the hotel for that night – I found this to be the case over at Assumption as well – you’re just able to refocus and you’re not…we don’t have a football dorm room here, so you’re involved with a lot of different people, a lot of different schedules. Your roommate as a freshman may not even be a football player, so when you add in all the outside noise that can come with it on campus on a normal Friday night, I think it’s a little bit of a problem. “I think when we’re on the road, you’re able to eliminate all of that. We put ourselves in a situation where we can just be al together, focused on one mission and not have to worry about anything. You know you’re walking into a hostile environment the next day and it’s pretty exciting to put yourself in a situation where you all come together and bond that evening and focus on the mission at hand. Watch the film together, maybe meet a little more than a regular home game.” As for what kind of problems the Crimson present, well, there’s a lot of them. Running back Aidan Bourget and quarterback Charlie Dean are at the top of the list, but a good line on both sides and a whole lot of experience make this quite a difficult task for Holy Cross to walk in and get a victory. “Obviously, coach Murphy is the all-time winningest coach in Ivy history, they just do such a good job, period,” said Chesney. “They’re coming off an 8-2 record from a year ago and both of those losses combined were five points. They were a touchdown away from being 10-0, and one of them in the Princeton game had some pretty interesting calls or whichever it was, I remember there being some issues with the officiating. Very good football team. “Their history is obviously phenomenal and it’s a huge game for both of us. I think our past two meetings, the biggest thing that stands out to me is that they hold 48-7 halftime lead on us. 24-0 and 24-7 over the past two meetings we’ve played, so we need to be much better than that. Offensively, Aidan Bourget, Charlie Dean, Cam Wimberly (the receiver) they’re just unbelievable football players, and they’re doing it behind an excellent, physical, well-coached offensive line. Schematically, they do all of it…defensively, they stop the run, skill players are probably the best we’ll see and there’s really not much to attack. Nobody runs against them.” This has the chance to be one of the best games not just of the weekend, but of the year in New England college football. There’s a reason it’s the New England Football Journal/Yolked Game of the Week. “Overall, they’re a great football team, but so are we,” added Chesney. “It’s going to take everything we’ve got.” nefootballjournal.com/2022/09/29/college-holy-cross-preparing-for-biggest-test-of-the-season-with-harvard/
