Kennedy has roots in politics, he's a bright Northwestern grad, he's perfect for this new position to encourage voting. After seven years in a support role he gets to take a leadership position as Executive Director. He can't very well put it off until after the season because with midterms coming up it's go time right now. Sometimes these positions have to wait for funding to be secured or things like that so I have no complaints. I'm sure he kept HC posted and the team was ready with a plan in place. I like Nelson hiring from within, with no wasted time needed to understand each player. Kennedy is no fly by night after seven years. Thanks Joe. Indeed.
But, put another way... the right job opportunity for him came up now. If he didn't take it, he'd very likely have been looking for a new gig come April anyway.

Looks like Kennedy voted with his feet. So the players transfered, the assistant quit and the head coach remains! Sad period in HC basketball. Wake up Kit.

The fact that Kennedy was still at HC after all these years tells me everything I need to know about his career trajectory. As RW used to say, assistant coaches at HC should be progressing up and out of the pL. Kennedy wasn’t able to do that and was surpassed by RJ Evans as the lead assistant. His departure will have no impact on whether the team succeeds or fails this year.

it is difficult for an assistant to move up when the two coaches he worked for were so unsuccessful

Can you show that HC has had more coaching turnover in the Nelson era than other regional mid majors? Power conference and Ivy League schools like PC, BC, UConn and Harvard have the budgets to support long term stable staffs but at the mid majors the Assistant Coaches move on fairly frequently as they work their way up to a shot at being a head coach or one of those higher compensated power conference assistant coach positions, from what I've observed. Nelson hasn't lost any coach he has hired has he? Kennedy was hired by Coach Carmody.

it is difficult for an assistant to move up when the two coaches he worked for were so unsuccessful His father was a D1 head coach for 30 years. He should have had more than enough connections to move up the ladder if capable.

How exactly do you tell how effective an assistant coach is in a program that took pandemic restrictions and magnified them into radio silence? I thought you might be thinking of the game Nelson had to miss and RJ was the fill-in head coach when you said RJ had surpassed Kennedy as the lead assistant. However this new position for Kennedy makes me think that with a Democratic Administration, he was already looking at returning to government or politics and might have stepped aside for RJ if RJ is dedicated to moving up in basketball. That's just a thought. I have no criticism of any of the assistant coaches but I have no way to individually grade them either.

So this move puts RJ a step higher on the pecking order...And the Kennedy move did come late, but that is how the job market opened up...Kennedy was a nice guy, I wish him well..

A kind and generous man who loved the game.
We should all hope that people describe us that way when referencing our contributions

I hated having to let people go from the organization, but when people trashed individuals as they departed I didn’t give it a second thought! Respect and trust are the basics for any team success and behavior from supporters. If and when a change is made, it will be a thank you for your service and wish you future success. People don’t take a job to fail, but sometimes they do.

Not kidding around, you buy multiple season tickets to support HC and often offer unused tickets to people who can get to the games.
