Ice Breaker at Lake Placid coming up this weekend Exciting didn't know this was on the schedule... The Icebreaker tournament marks the traditional start to the women’s college hockey season. Bringing together four of the nation’s top teams with national players with two days of exciting match-ups. Saturday’s Championship game will feature a puck drop from none other than Steve Carlson (Steve Hanson) from the cult classic movie “Slapshot,” who is in town for a showing of the movie at the Lake Placid Film Forum. (Make sure to check that out this Thursday, October 20 at 8:00 pm at the Palace Theatre.)

Ok...gametime 4pm out at Lake Placid vs. St. Lawrence.
I would like to think Clarkson and St. Lawrence would bring a decent amount of fans considering the travel factor. Syracuse potentially could also bring some fans, but is a bit of a hike from Placid. Just from looking at scores, St. Lawrence should be decent. They lost an OT game to #4 Minn. Duluth and lost to #11 Penn State. They also lost in OT to Providence but then stole the game from the Friars the next night. Clarkson is rated 11 in the country and just had back to back wins vs. Syracuse last week (you would think they would mix it up and have Clarkson play someone else considering they literally just played two games). Cuse is 1-6 including those two games to the Knights. They split with Merrimack and lost handedly to #1 Colgate. I think we would fair ok vs. Syracuse, potentially even winning that match-up. We have a shot vs. St. Lawrence, but I think Clarkson would be too much for us. But as they say...games are played on the ice not on paper. Go Cross!

Based on the description of bringing together 4 of the nation’s top team, I seriously thought we were not in this tourney and stopped paying attention. Now I learn that we are in this tourney with some other not top teams and the marketers may have exaggerated slightly.

I always assumed St. Lawrence was named after the river and was not a Catholic college, perhaps because whenever it was mentioned it was in the context of playing hockey against old line Brahmin type institutions.
Turns out it was founded as a Seminary by the Universalist Church in 1856 and admitted men and women clergy candidates from the start. I always liked the Unitarians who must have merged with the Universalists at some point because now it is Unitarian Universalist that you hear about.
Hockey is their big sport but the St. Lawrence MBB team beat an NBA team 69-67 in 1950. Hint: Togo played for this team later in the 1950s.

I thought they were "The Larrys" when I lived in Syracuse.

"Saints or Laurentians, whichever you prefer," as a long time HC announcer would have put it.

And the Syracuse Nationals became the Philadelphia 76ers after the Philadelphia Warriors moved to San Francisco.
Did Togo play with the team after the move to Philly?

Togo’s last season in the NBA was ‘59-‘60 as a Syracuse Nat several years before the Nats moved to Philly after the Warriors moved to SF.

And the fans go wild in the Foley household.
And Merrimack men beat BC also, so I guess they are good in hockey.

It is hilarious that people still think UNH, Maine, and BC are marquee programs. Hockey East on the men's side is basically a battle between UMass, Northeastern, UConn, PC, and maybe BU.

Now 1-8 in HE after 4-0 loss at Maine last night - another game this afternoon - outshot 50-25 We have completely flopped against the bottom half of the league and now we have the power programs ahead - I think the days of excusing this coach are ending soon - we simply should be better by now

We should be better against OOC competition including other schools who have recently joined a D-1 league. But we're still the HE program with the least experience in D-1 aren't we? So logically we shouldn't be better than other HE schools but we should look for a coach who has shown she can beat expectations, when the current contract is up.

But they are in their sixth season in Hockey East so nearly two recruiting cycles...
