ESPN picked their Player of the Year choice and his top challenger, for every conference. Their choices for the PL are Richardson of Colgate and Rucker of Army. Also a nugget in the write-up was the fact Army has never played in the Big Dance and their coach 55 years ago, Bob Knight, turned down a chance to do so for an NIT bid.

That’s what happens to a player on a losing team.

Pre season picks are almost worthless. To hoops point, Gates has no chance for the “real” POY unless we win the league championship or at least are runner up.

Pre-season POY is a curse. The best a player can do is meet expectations. That's the ceiling, he can never exceed expectations, for that award anyway. And if he doesn't win POY it sounds like he underperformed even if he had a great season.
