The US Senate got its first new member Tuesday night when Democratic Rep. Peter Welch, my class mate, was elected to replace retiring Democratic Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont. As Vermont's sole representative in the House for several years, Peter Welch was known as popular constituent advocate and one of the most vocal proponents of lowering prescription drug prices. In very early returns, Peter had about two-thirds of the vote, leading Republican Gerald Malloy. The AP has projected him as the winner. He will join Senator Bob Casey, '82 from Pennsylvania. Congressman Mark DeSaulnier, '74 also won re-election to the US. House of Representatives from California's 10th Congressional District. His brother Ted was also in my class.

We used to have several other congressmen in the last decade (Virginia and New York come to kind) but they must have left office. Welch was already known state wide as Vermont has only one congressional district.

Tim Bishop ‘72 represented CD 1, the east end of Suffolk County, NY, from 2003-15. He has recently co-taught one Poli-Sci course at HC. He is a very loyal Crusader, attending reunions regularly. (He is also a good friend of our family and mentor to one of our daughters, the HC’03 grad.)

I am unsure. He did teach during the 2022 Spring semester. My guess is that he is still teaching.

Edit- Jim Moran HC 1967 was a congressman from Virginia

Former RI Governor Edward DiPrete was Holy Cross Class of 1955. He served as governor from 1985 to 1991. He later spent part of his retirement in prison after having pleaded guilty to corruption charges involving the awarding of state contracts.

Yes. I met Ed 2-3 times as he was a good friend of a friend and lived in my town a couple of miles from me but since sold his house and lost track of him. Seemed nice enough. One of the times I met him was at an HC Club of RI president's reception. I thought it would be inappropriate to ever ask him about his prison time. Now, if you want to talk about RI corruption, there'd be a picture of Buddy Cianci next to the definition. Both gentlemen are/were disgraces to Jesuit education. But, Ed served his time. Buddy, on the other hand, always seemed crooked even after his release. A couple, 3 years ago story that pretty accurately reflects the guy I met: www.providencejournal.com/story/opinion/columns/2019/11/17/at-85-diprete-savors-his-real-legacy-family/2270815007/

I think we could be missing another HC grad congressman of the past 20 years—maybe another from NY?

I think you are thinking of another member of the Class of 1969. Mike McNulty was a member of Congress representing a district in upstate New York for about 20 years before retiring about 10-12 years ago.

The best Ed DiPrete story involved his dumpster diving looking for the bribe money he accidentally threw out with his Walt's Roast Beef bag after finishing his takeout meal.

He campaigned last month for the Congressional nominee out in your neck of the woods. Hopefully he was able to combine it with a visit to see his son.
