Thought it worth posting an article from a few years back about the effect that the work of Ken Pomeroy, Dean Oliver, and others has had on the college coaching fraternity. Among those cited in the article who've embraced the value of advanced stats as an essential part of their tool kits are Brad Stevens, Billy Donovan, Bo Ryan, Jim Larranaga, and Fred Hoiberg, none of whom I would regard as dweebs or "losers." A few posters - notably KY and SoV - share this kind of information with us regularly, and use it to analyze, reflect, buttress arguments, etc. I thoroughly enjoy their efforts, suspect many others do, too, and hope that those posters who don't will enjoy this read as well. bleacherreport.com/articles/1556819-the-ken-pomeroy-effect-how-advanced-metrics-have-revolutionized-ncaa-basketball

wait, i thought "stats are for losers"?!?
seriously, thanks woogray as this was great. i appreciate these types of stats that ky, sov, and bison137 post often and found this article to be very interesting. it's no surprise that top level coaches like donovan and larranga are using these metrics as they are 1.) great inward-facing team diagnostic devices (what are we doing well?, what aren't we doing well? who is playing well? who isn't playing well?) and 2.) a useful means of identifying preparation needs for specific opponents.

Stats are for losers unless they work in your favor, right?
Thanks for posting, Woo.

"You (the Cowboys) had the No. 1 offense in the league, the No. 4 defense in the league. Why can't you get the ball past the pylon?" Pelley asked him during an interview in the middle of the season.
"Stats are for losers," Jerry Jones answered. "They relish in them. The stat is the score. And when you don't win that score, nothing good happens.
The ol' Ball Coach....“Statistics are for losers and assistant coaches. Head coaches worry about wins and losses.”
and on and on

The losers probably don't. As for Jerry Jones, no-one has spent more money for less result than him. It was only when his son dragged him kicking and screaming into the 21st century that the Cowboys started to slowly gain some credibility my

How about Bellichick?
But in all seriousness, I'm not against all satistics. Unfortunately they get sliced and diced to the point where they are meaningless. The most annoying type and I've seen this on our board where we try to paint a more positive view of our football failings is when we lose 52 to 14 and say how great it was that we won the fourth quarter 14 to 12. I know that's not what was posited above but the slicing and dicing becomes meaningless. "Jes'win, baby!" (Al Davis)

Using advanced statistics helps coaches learn, for example, the foolishness of having .320 hitters with a .490 OBP attempt sacrifice bunts

The $19.95 I pay for Ken Pomeroy's site each year is money we spent.
