Many of us drove to the out-of-date structure that was McCoy Stadium from the Worcester area. Border patrol in Smithfield was always nice and welcome to us.
Not the same equivalent. Those people were not driving to see a team that turned its back on them and abandoned its area after some 50 years of loyalty.
You could argue Pawtucket turned it's back on the PawSox. BTW....you'll be disappointed to know there are plenty of RI fans coming to games.

From what I understand, it is no where near the numbers the Woosox hoped for.

Hoped for or expected? I am sure they, and all owners of stadia and teams “hope for” an SRO crowd every game. Their expectations are certainly considerably lower.

Minor league sports franchises are not approved for widows and orphans to invest in. The WooSox have to be way above average in success.

Having been born in Worcester and living there for 50 years in two segments, I think I am entitled to say that when I go back now, people seem to have a extra spring in their step which I did not detect before. Is this caused in part by Polar Park? Who knows, but, I think it does, and that benefit to Worcester cannot be measured in dollars and cents.

2023 season attendance numbers for the MLB affiliated minors have been released. The self reported figures for the Worcester Red Sox at Polar Park show little change from the prior 2022 season numbers. Overall attendance was down 519,661 versus 532,152 but that was due to three less home games. The reported average attendance slightly rose to 7,424 from the previous year's 7,290. Worcester once again finished fifth in AAA and 6th overall. All the teams ahead of them however saw significant attendance growth. It should also be noted that there was much discussion earlier this season regarding the attendance numbers that the WooSox were reporting. It was generally thought that actual attendance this season was noticeably less than reported paid attendance compared to the preceding year. Thus far in three seasons at Polar Park, the WooSox have come no where near the attendance that was reported by the franchise during its peak at McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket. The team averaged over 9,000 six times in the period from 2001 to 2008. In the early years of your analysis the PawSox had a ton of free ticket promotions in Mass. That may have helped the Mondor group to build up attendance. I noticed the freebies and BOGO promotions faded in the last several years in RI. I don't think the WooSox have resorted to free ticket promotions yet although business sponsors may do it

Attendance numbers are down at Fenway too. Get over it and get a life.

It would seem to me that WooSox attendance may have reached its peak and possibly plateaued at a level some 2k less per game than its best years in Pawtucket. Typically a new ballpark experiences its best attendance in the immediate years after its opening. Covid impacted Year 1 at Polar Park so that is not a great barometer. The fact that attendance was basically the same in years two and three however provide a better measuring stick. While the per game average did see a slight uptick in 2023, it has to be troubling to WooSox ownership that there apparently were a lot more paid tickets with no shows this past season. That is not a good sign for attendance growth. It will be interesting to see if this level of support can be continued going forward with the novelty of a new team and park fading. Many franchises sometimes see a noticeable decline after a few years. Will that happen in Worcester?

Today's WooSox game has been cancelled for the second straight day due to the weather. It was for rain yesterday but today Polar Park is covered in snow. The home opener was however able to be played on Tuesday as the team reported a crowd of 8,422 in the 9,508 capacity stadium. The loss of two separate gate crowds (one game will become part of a single admission DH and the other will be played at Buffalo) so early in the season is not a good start.

Never, in the history of baseball, has a game been rained out, in April.

IIRC those brave few that watched the 33 inning game froze their ass off if the point someone's trying to make is that it's always sunny in Pawtucket.

While it was cold in the wee hours of that April morning, it was warm months later for the resumption of the 33rd inning which I was there to see.
While Pawtucket doesn't have tropical weather by any means, it is typically up to about 7 degrees warmer than Worcester in the colder months. It is at a much lower elevation and gets the effects of being closer to the moderating effects of the ocean (the river there is tidal with a seal actually having been once spotted swimming just below the Main Street falls a few decades ago). The temp difference often puts it south of the snow/rain line for many winter storms. That was the case with the last storm as there was zero snow in Pawtucket. The rain stopped by early afternoon and a game could have actually been played yesterday if the city still had a baseball team.

Home opener in Pawtucket postponed three days in row in 2018. Third time was for snow. On April 5. www.providencejournal.com/story/sports/2018/04/06/pawsox-home-opener-snowed-out/12804191007/rf - The appeal was made to Pawtucket, Providence, and RI. They could not or would not accept the terms. The move was made. Larry Lucchino is dead. Whether or the investment in Polar Park was wise for the city or not (likely not) will not bring the Paw Sox back. And certainly dumping on Worcester weather will not bring them back either. Let go of the hate or you'll wind-up like Inigo Montoya at the conclusion of the Princess Bride

Democratic Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson reportedly expressed support for the project.
Johnson said the plan will "result in no new taxes on the residents of Chicago."
Cough, cough.
The new stadium is supposed to be some sort of indoor/retractable facility- at least I can see the logic in that because you can book many, many more dates than if it's exposed to the elements.
The Bears own the closed Arlington Park Racetrack. They might end up building a stadium there.
