The last two games against Harvard in Worcester drew over 10,000.
The thought of fans being turned away for HC - Harvard next year is a damn shame. Meanwhile, just down the road, we have a beautiful 20,000+ seat stadium with comfortable tailgating sitting empty. Polar Park was cool year one. I guess it was fine last year because Bucknell was the opponent, and we didn't figure to draw as well at Fitton compared to a better program and name opponent.
If we enjoy the relationship with the WooSox and believe playing there helps further develop our relationship with the city (I can get on board with that), couldn't we at least play the Lafayette game (Oct. 21) there instead? In answering my own question, we then wouldn't have a game at Fitton between Sept. 30 and Nov. 18.
Put me in the ihoop camp with this.

Not true at all as neither game has drawn 10k. 2021 vs Colgate: 9508 2022 vs Bucknell: 7658 Is it a problem with arithmetic or with reading comprehension, or perhaps with both? The poster says “in TWO YEARS”. Sounds like the poster is suggesting that 10,000 of the 17,000 fans were locals new to HC football. Edit: Looks like long suffering and I were dweeb-countering at the same time Might be something about logic with you that there wasn't 10k different people in attendance....I would bet 80 percent of the people that attended are Holy Cross season ticket holders.

Football games, be it Yankee Stadium, Fenway or Polar Park, are mostly "garbage" imo....terrible sight-lines, no tailgating for the most part, off-campus etc.....I would much prefer to see HC play an historic rival like Harvard at a wonderful football-viewing venue like Fitton Field on a beautiful Saturday afternoon in September...your mileage may vary. This is true for outdoor hockey too. They are horrible venues for football.

Memories. There is something very special about Fitton Field on a glorious, sunny, warm September afternoon. Nonetheless, for reasons unknown, TPTB have decided to play Harvard, one of our marquee rivals at Polar Park. This, too shall pass. There will be other games against Harvard and our other rivals at Fitton. PS Although it was obvious HC - BC could not continue I still miss that game when it was reasonably competitive. And, I will to the end. Life.

Is it possible that the EBW connection (and his to Lucchino) drives this?

Is it possible that the EBW connection (and his to Lucchino) drives this? The EBW kids have probably known Larry for fifty years or so.

Nothing says you can't have an EBW Classic at Fitton, but I would guess "yes", the connection plays a role.

Can we please set bleachers on the field? This would make football games at baseball stadiums less bad.

The only thing that can make football games at baseball stadiums “ less bad” regarding sight lines….is to play football games at football stadiums.
The poor sight lines are overcome from a fan stand point if the team you are rooting, wins the game conclusively. I still feel the salt in the wound and a bitter taste from the Yankee Stadium game. Beating Fordham consecutively since then has eased the pain. 😊

With the helmet, it made me wonder how old a typical WooSox player is compared to the Holy Cross football players as I assume many of these AAA baseball players have foregone college careers and went straight to the minor leagues after high school. Bet most of our 5th year players are older than just about all the WooSox players. Someone who knows can educate me. Thanks!

Just looked at the Woo Sox Roster and the average age is 28.2 years with a median of 27.8
Youngest on the roster is 22.8 years. Oldest is 34.5
AAA baseball has become the taxi squad for the MLB team. I'll do the same for the AA Red Sox affiliate, we'd probably get a younger cohort.

Portland Sea Dogs
Average age = 25.2 Years Median age = 24.9 Youngest = 21.2 Oldest = 28.6
So roughly a 12 year span for the Woo Sox and 7 year span for the Sea Dogs.

I find those numbers surprising but thanks for the research.

The Woo and the WooSox couldn't have dreamed of a better partner than Holy Cross Football. Billed as a twelve month resource for the city and region, I have to think the annual EBW Classic has been the biggest non-baseball event at Polar Park since the stadium opened.
Also, if HC had a Bucknell level FB program, would the NE FB Journal cover this press conference with a live reporter? Probably because that staff loves football, but still it adds a spark to the visit to cover a press conference about a game that can easily effect national rankings.

The Harvard guy was terrific. I would expect no less from any competitive athlete from any school in any sport. Now, let's go kick their butt. GoCrossGo

With all due respect to Yale, from a competitive viewpoint this game is Harvard's Super Bowl. What a delight to wander through the desert of decades of mostly FCS futility, with attendance falling slightly but steadily over the years, HC having some good teams but only getting to the post season once between 1983 and Chesney, losing radio coverage after decades, etc., to having this excitement about a game between two storied programs an hour apart in the newest professional stadium in New England.
Perhaps the regional attraction of Polar Park may have been wasted on Colgate and Bucknell. Would love to see Merrimack or Bryant host us at this unique regional venue, make a big deal over it with press conferences like this, and preserve five home games at Fitton plus the away game at Polar that season.
The mediocrity was between Duffner and Chesney, the lack of post season games under Duffner was not due to performance.
