Our football rival (Fordham) is having a very nice hoops season (21-6) Proving once again that it is possible to be good at both sports the same year. And that a seriously floundering program can actually right the ship.
Apparently it’s the first time they’ve won 20 games in over 30 years.

Considering where they’ve been seemingly forever, I’ll bet 20 wins and 4th place in the A10 feels pretty good to the Ram faithful

Considering where they’ve been seemingly forever, I’ll bet 20 wins and 4th place in the A10 feels pretty good to the Ram faithful Spectacular turnaround. Last year, first with this new coach, they actually hit .500. This year, his second, they’re 21-6. So, we can have hope here at HC. One of men’s college basketball’s most historically irrelevant programs has authored a remarkable turnaround this season. www.si.com/.amp/college/2023/02/16/fordham-rams-mens-basketball-st-bonaventure

How much does Dave Paulsen have to do with Fordham’s success?

Last year’s coach was Kyle Neptune, his first head job, now at ‘Nova. This is Keith Urgo’s first season at Fordham Yes and no. Last year (his first at Fordham) Urgo was “associate head coach”. This (his second year at Fordham) he is the head coach. “Keith Urgo, who was recognized as one of the nation’s top assistant coaches in 2019-2020, was named head coach at Fordham in April of 2022 after serving as the associate head coach at Fordham in 2021-2022. In his first year at Fordham, Urgo helped the Rams to an amazing turnaround as Fordham recorded a 16-16 overall record, a 14-win improvement from 2020-2021. The Rams won a second round Atlantic 10 Tournament game and reached the Quarterfinals for the first time since 2007 and opened Atlantic 10 regular season play 2-0 for the first time since joining the conference in 1995.”

Meanwhile, Villanova is now 13-14 after 30 wins and a trip to the Final Four last year. Their only commit for next year appears to be a forward from Canada with mostly mid-major offers. Tough to replace a legend.

The lesson would appear to be with the right head coach, a program can be turned around fairly quickly. As I and others have posted in the past, with a smaller roster, turning around a basketball program is a lot easier than doing the same thing with a 90+ football roster.
Let the process begin soon on Mt. St. James. 🤞🙏🏻

Did Fordham sign some more talented recruits? Is that a key contributor to the program's turnaround? Of course it's likely a combination of factors, but the recruiting angle is always interesting

It looks like Fordham’s leaving scorer now is a Grad student (came in from another school 2 years ago) and second leading scorers is a Grad transfer from Georgia Tech.

Even with Fordham's gaudy win/loss record, the team will not seriously contend for an NCAA or NIT bid. They are presently 21-6 but only have an NET rank of #132 as they played one of the weakest OOC schedules of any D1 team. The upper NET cutoff range for the NCAA is about 45-50 with the NIT at about 90. Unless the Bronx Rams win the A-10 Tournament in Brooklyn, they are likely headed to the CBI should they desire.

Or if they do win the regular season crown (highly unlikely, impossible ?) and lose in the tourney, they would get an NIT invite.

A run to the A10 championship game might give them a fighting chance at the NIT -- which who cares at this point -- without the allure of the Garden its now CBI 2.0 with slightly better teams. Also as much as I've enjoyed the Rams' season after all these awful years, the A10 isn't very good this year.

Hail men of Fordham onto the fray... Over/under on length of Coach Urgo's stay at FU. From an FU family, love FU but the school's upward success is limited by the beautiful but outdated, inadequate Rose Hill Gym. PS In Spring of '56(?) watched FU defeat a Tommy Heinsohn highly ranked HC squad in the Rose Hill Gym. It was an extremely physical tough exciting game.

Very cool memory, thanks for bringing an old classic game to life. IMO, Urgo still has work to do to punch his ticket anywhere as far as moving up in the coaching world. I like him but it's year one and he's working with a veteran team. Fordham's having a nice season in a very down year for the Atlantic 10 and is riding the hot hand of Quisenberry, a standout grad student playing his 2nd and final season for Fordham. The Rams have historically had a lot of trouble keeping star players at Rose Hill -- see Soriano (current stud at St. John's), Pascal (transferred to 'Nova and eventually made it to the NBA after winning A-10 ROY) and Jio Fontan (USC). And that was before the madness with the portal went into overdrive.

Can’t mention recent Fordham greats without Smush Parker.

Smush Parker only played one year at Fordham (as a soph JUCO transfer) but he declared for the draft following that season, unlike the others I listed who all transferred. IIRC, he failed to get drafted but wound up making it as a UFA and bounced around on several teams for 5 or 6 years before moving on to opportunities overseas. Smush is probably best known for a beef with the late Kobe Bryant, with whom he clashed during a stint as the Lakers PG.
My favorite Fordham player was Bevon Robin (Rice HS alum), who starred for four years. Best Fordham win I remember was when he hit the game winner to beat St. John's as a senior -- back when beating St. John's was still a big deal.
Another favorite of mine was Bryant Dunston who was a four year starter down low from 2004-2008. Out of St. John's Prep in Astoria, a lower-level CHSAA school that produced both Dunston and UConn PG Taliek Brown in a span of 5 years. During the Dunston/Derek Whittenberg era, Fordham had a couple teams that approached .500 in A-10 play and that was back when Xavier and Temple were still in the league. They had a couple of guards from Toronto on those teams who could both get hot.

Would be only the 4th former NBA player to make it back as a ref if he is successful.
