So we're basically going from the era where the bigs were dominated by "one and dones" to the entire 360+ schools in the same boat. Swell. It's almost like a 5,000 piece puzzle in a box - each year, 13 pieces are taken out by each school, hoping the pieces match. Then, after the end of the year, some pieces are discarded, some brand new pieces are added, then they are all thrown back into the box....and the process repeats.

Schools and Leagues who keep their heads and don't over-react will emerge in a good place. So many slamming the new indicates the traditional four year approach is better. By both choice and necessity, HC and the PL will be sailing close to shore, not initiating running off slow starters and blowing up teams every year. Losing the occasional blue chipper is a small price to pay for being the chicken not running around with it's head chopped off.

Is there any coordination between the portal dates and the date a coach has to tell players their scholarship for the next season is guaranteed?
A player would be in a tough spot if he was told he wouldn't have a scholarship after the portal closed and he was unable to contact other coaches who have scholarships available to see if they want him to transfer in and play on scholarship for their team.

Like this guy. The PC coach sounds pretty angry at some/many of his fellow coaches. Likely justified

The PG at Seton Hall, Kadary Richmond, is in the Portal and rumored to be heading to St John's for his senior season.
I spoke yesterday to someone who is very close to the SH program and he told me that SH offered Richmond $800k in NIL to stay.
He apparently will be getting more than that from St John's.
These numbers are crazy.

Hey - what was the name of that book by Feinstein? The Last Amateurs. Wow, it's like ancient history now. I actually knew that, but as we're talking about college kids who think 800K is too low an offer to stay at school, I just wanted to reinforce the idea that these kids are supposed to be amateurs

As much as I like see HC do well in hoops, I am glad HC isn't swimming in those waters. This stuff really has no business being part of the college scene.

Portal exceeds 2000 at 2007. I know that includes a good number of grad transfers thanks to Covid and walk-on as well, but that is more than 5 per D1 squad. Harvard’s second leading scorer, a 6’8” sophomore, is in the portal. Their leading scorer and IL ROY, has already transferred to Georgetown. A third underclassman Johnnie, is also in the portal. That is unheard of until now.

According to Bart Torvik, 31 of the top 40 scorers at the mid-major level, have entered the portal as of 4-30.

It’s almost like we’re fans of a minor league baseball team like the WooSox where our favorite players are always getting called up to play in Boston. And we don’t even get to have them return if they flop in the bigs.

One major difference is that these college basketball players, alleged amateurs, are being bribed (legally) to go to the highest bidder.

One major difference is that these college basketball players, alleged amateurs, are being bribed (legally) to go to the highest bidder. Or the players are dribbling all the way to the bank, depending on how you look at it. Terms like poach and bribe aren't always fair because NIL is the result of something similar to a civil rights lawsuit on behalf of players as I understand it. Accepting an NIL offer is not taking a bribe.

I think as time passes many top PL players will succumb to offers of $50K or $100K (or more?) to transfer

Calipari just landed a top transfer Johnell Davis for a reported $1MM NIL payment.
I know a number of posters were worried about what would happen to the Kentucky Hoops program with Calipari's abrupt departure, but new coach Mark Pope has been refilling the roster
"Mark Pope continues to prove doubters wrong at Kentucky so far, especially in recruiting. Pope added two more transfers from the portal on Wednesday in the form of former Dayton guard Koby Brea and former West Virginia guard Kerr Kriisa. Brea was the best three-point shooter in the country last season, making 49.8% of his attempts from deep. Other recent portal additions include Lamont Butler Jr. (San Diego State), Amari Williams (Drexel), Brandon Garrison (Ok. State) and Andrew Carr (Wake Forest). Both Butler and Williams have won Defensive Player of the Year in their respective conferences."
