In the oldest season assist record I could find, the '79-80 team of Perry, Kelly(only 22 games-injured), had 549 assists and 914 fg, 60 % the '15-16 team had 479 assists and 775 fg., #16 nationally this season we are an outstanding 147-208, #3 in the nation. now assists is the only stat to measure passing, but this comparison would put last year's team even with its poor record slightly ahead of that 19-11 last Perry team which lost in the dance to the Iona Ruland team, which had to vacate its wins . cannot find assist stats for any of the Potter teams or before that.

Coach Carmody's Northwestern teams ranked #1 in 4 seasons and #2 in several more. Maybe we'll give him another #1 ranking this year.....

From my days keeping the stat book many years ago, I see to remember an assist was credited if the pass led directly to a basket. Less a matter f counting the steps than the overall play. An outlet pass to a teammate running up the court (who takes several steps straight to the hoop) could be an assist.

what is an assist? is the number of dribbles a scorer takes determinative? Here is the basic info on assists from the NCAA statisticians' manual. There are numerous examples that follow, but I didn't copy all of them. The criteria for an assist are somewhat tougher than in the NBA. SECTION 5—ASSISTS A player is credited with an assist when the player makes, in the judgment of the statistician, the principal pass contributing directly to a field goal (or an awarded score of two or three points). Only one assist is to be credited on any field goal and only when the pass was a major part of the play. The same player cannot be credited with an assist and a field goal made on the same possession. Such a pass should be either (a) a pass that finds a player free after he or she has maneuvered without the ball for a positional advantage, or (b) a pass that gives the receiving player a positional advantage he or she otherwise would not have had. Philosophy. An assist should be more than a routine pass that just happens to be followed by a field goal. It should be a conscious effort to find the open player or to help a player work free. There should not be a limit on the number of dribbles by the receiver. It is not even necessary that the assist be given on the last pass. There is no restraint on the distance or type of shot made, for these are not the crucial factors in determining whether an assist should be credited. - - - - - One note on the assist to FG ratio is that a team that doesn't hit the offensive boards should have a somewhat better ratio, since baskets that come directly off of offensive rebounds cannot have an assist. Also a team that has a dominant post player who frequently backs his opponent down after receiving an entry pass may have less assists, since most official scorers won't assign an assist if the post player does a lot of work to create the shot after receiving the entry pass.

Sounds like passing the ball around the perimeter leading to a made 3 in many cases does not lead to an assist

Looks as if the best ratios before this current season were '76-77-.680. Perry, Potter, Vicens '75-76-.647 Potter, Vicens '03-04-.640. Jave, Kham '07-08--.639 Clifford, Doherty, Beinert
By far the first two were the most successful seasons

Sounds like passing the ball around the perimeter leading to a made 3 in many cases does not lead to an assist I think that's a fair statement. The Statisticians' Manual has this example: "Adams passes to Allen, who is about 20 feet from the basket. Allen immediately shoots and scores. RULING: This probably is the toughest decision involving assists. If Adams found Allen unguarded, Adams probably should get the assist. If the ball merely was being passed around in hopes of finding a way to penetrate the defense and Allen merely decided to shoot, then no assist should be credited." - - - - - One thing about assists is that some scorers are much more liberal giving them out than others. If you see a team with a much better assist ratio at home than on the road, that might be a good tip-off. Some may have seen the game last week when the Atlantis corer gave out an assist to a Kentucky guard (De 'Aaron Fox) who threw a routine pass to another player on the periphery who then passed to another player who shot and scored. At the time, it gave Fox a 10th assist and a triple double.

Those guys (Williams, Scooter Tropf, Joe Viviano, Grant Evans, Greg Martucci, along with Dwight Pernell and Lorn Davis) really got up and down the court; points were scored all over the place. If I remember correctly, they went out west to play the Hank and Bo Show at Loyola Marymount and lost something like 128-104.

A little lower than our overall 70.7% . . . but 64.9% would still be good for 14th best nationally.

We played terribly vs Maine, but that 9/20 stat does not seem correct. even though we got killed by the cuse, 10/17 vs their zone is pretty good. our assists yesterday for layups against Q's zones was impressive, even though their D is bad if hoops gave two assists on a field goal, as in hockey, we would do very well.

Draymon Green would be the closest today) led a team in rebounds all four years were also an assist leader in two seasons ? he also scored 1789 points, tied for fifth all time(with Tommy H) Chris is certainly the front runner for best all-around HC player. A good topic for an off season discussion.
