Wow.
Now only 3 long-time DI schools remain having never been to the NCAA Tournament -- Army, The Citadel, William & Mary.
Wonder who will be the next warm body to join the NEC. New Haven?

I am sad to hear that dropping D1 athletics was felt to be necessary, but pleased that SFC seems to have found a way to continue its mission to help the students of its underserved communities.

Once they moved to a new site without a gym, the handwriting was on the wall. Their days are surely numbered. I feel especially bad for the current athletes and coaches. Their men’s hoops coach, Glenn Braica, is universally liked and respected.

It doesn't say whether they are doing a Hartford or not having sports altogether; can't think of any "no sports" colleges.

Accordingly, the Board of Trustees recently approved a strategic realignment plan which includes the elimination of the College's NCAA Division I athletics program, effective at the conclusion of the Spring 2023 semester. “

The FAQs make it clear that there will be no more athletic department or teams after this Spring semester concludes.

While there are 40+ of the 363 (as of the start of the ‘22-‘23 season) D-1 basketball schools, that have never made the NCAA men’s tournament, nycrusader2010 is correct in that only 3 “long-time” schools remain after St. Francis NY’s departure. AFAIK, “long-time” is defined as a school that has been D-1 (or the NCAA equivalent) for every season since 1938-39, the year of the first NCAA tournament. While Maine is one of the 40+, it doesn’t qualify as part of the “long-time” group with Army, The Citadel, William & Mary and (up to this yr.) St. Francis NY because Maine (the Yankee Conference?) was not considered D-1 from the late 1940s until the early 1960s.

Maine has never been, either. Just a question of what year you start with. Schools that have been Division I or "major college" since the advent of the NCAA Tournament in the late 1930's. Maine and the YanCon schools were DII until the 1970's I think.

Yankee Conference football was at one time DII. That was not the case with basketball. The first NCAA's for UConn was in 1951, URI in 1961, and UMass in 1962. URI was the first YC team to appear in a postseason tournament with its first NIT in 1941 when it was a bigger deal than the NCAA.

Vermont won the first YC basketball title in 1947; all the rest of the championships were won by UMass, UConn or URI.
In football, Vermont never won a title, the other 5 schools did. Might have something to do with them being undefeated since 1975 (i.e., they dropped the sport).

As far as I can tell, Citadel is an even bigger "have not"; no NIT appearances either.
