Let me preface this with a bit of background. While doing volunteer work on Move-In Day and being of an age when I no longer have a clue of a student's age, I forgot that not all students on campus for Move-In Day were "first year students" (nee: Freshmen) and while working a table in front of Hogan, I made an assumption that one of the women was a FYS and she politely told me that she was a senior. We chat it up and I find that she's one of the captains of the ladies soccer team but is out on injured reserve. I tell her that while I have watched some games on ESPN+, I hadn't been to any games in person. She makes me promise to go to at least one game in person "but after I can play again." I go to Senior Day game; she again is reinjured and can't play but her whole clan is there and I meet them and, to my shock, they know all about me. The team had not won a single game to that point but I promise them that they will win this game (alluding to Joe Namath's prediction over the Colts). The team goes on to win and thrills them all and my "lucky 50th reunion cap" becomes legend. I've encountered this player multiple times since as she's a ticket taker at the Hart Center for basketball games.
So, here is the response I got from her as I wished her well as graduation approaches:
* insurance joke: Definition of an actuary: "He wanted to be an accountant but didn't have the personality"
This young lady was inducted into the Alpha Sigma Nu which means her grades were in the top 5% of all seniors and perennial Dean's List occupant. On her way to Ernst & Young after graduation.

Hi Mr. Nxxxxx,
So great to hear from you! Yes!!! This is such a bitter sweet time. HOW AM I GRADUATING?? It doesn't feel real yet
I don't think you truly know how much it means to me that you are donating to the soccer program on behalf of . . . . . . . ! SO beyond kind and generous of you.
Since the day I committed to Holy Cross, everyone who I talked to preached about how amazing HC was and how envious they were that I was just starting out my career here on Mt. Saint James. For so long, I didn't understand this LOVE that seeped out of them, and sometimes even wished my time on this hill away. I mean c'mon, Holy Cross is just a school, how amazing and influential could it truly be? But oh how wrong and naive I was.
My time here has truly been something I never could have imagined. From the initial challenges of freshman year, COVID and a semester off, all the way to 3 head coach changes. . . let's just say I'll have a good story to tell my kids and grandkids.
However, through all the downs, this campus still held so much beauty -- something that recently I have struggled to put into words. The Holy Cross community, such as people like you, is something so rare and so special. I have never seen professors, peers, friends, and alumni care so immensely about each other, and further, be so willing to reach out a helping hand. You truly do not see that a lot, and I think this alone speaks to the magic of the hill.
I am so grateful we met that hot summer day outside the Hoval. I know you don't believe me, but I immediately called my mom following our conversation. Although you'd like to claim my call home was likely because of your actuary* joke, in reality, it was because our conversation touched me. You bleed purple and are truly everything this campus hopes to create out of its students!!
. . . . . . . . .
Hope to see you soon, but if not in person, then please do not be a stranger!! Love keeping in touch with you!
Best,
Sxxxxxx
