I am more of a fan of vermouth (both varieties) than he was, apparently.
"“I have taken more out of alcohol than it has taken out of me,” Churchill famously said — and his martini order certainly shows no fear of the strong stuff. Our lauded prime minister was a lifelong advocate of Plymouth Gin, despite having little time for its cocktail cabinet bedmate, vermouth.
Once, when asked how much vermouth he wanted in his cocktail, Churchill replied: “I would like to observe the vermouth from across the room while I drink my martini.” The statesman’s version, then, has come to be little more than chilled gin and stoic silence. It is sometimes said to be accompanied by a sly bow in the direction of France, in lieu of any of the nation’s distracting liqueurs."

When I was a bartender people would sometimes complain that there was too much vermouth in their martini, so I would remake them one but put the glass beneath the bar just out of their sight line and wave the vermouth bottle over it, then deliver them a fresh cocktail with straight gin and an olive.
Generally people would say, "perfect"
I personally enjoyed the taste of a Kahlua Sombrero, which was frequently ordered in the 70’s. I copied an older bartender who kept a coffee cup under the bar and always made the Sombrero (with real cream) too big and when it looked like he was pouring the extra out of the silver blender can into the sink under the bar, he was filling his coffee cup and then innocently sipping it between customers.
That lasted until the night I had too many sips and simultaneously had a queezy stomach from the cream, was buzzed from the alcohol and jittery from the caffeine when the dinner theater across the street let out and the bar got jammed with customers.
I do not have Winston Churchhill's constitution.

I thought my initial post creating the thread was very appropriate for this being Holy Cross’ 50th year of coeducation.
Crossports, however, seems to be about 99% male and subsequent posts reflects that, “not that there’s anything wrong with that.” 😊

When I was introducing a new gin brand many years ago I featured a quote from Mr Churchill on the sales brochure I wrote: he said “the gin & tonic has saved the lives of more Englishmen than all the doctors in the commonwealth”. He was referring to the fact that tonic water contains quinine and thus helped prevent malaria among British soldiers stationed in India.

Best Martini, ever: Pour 3 Beefeater Gin; Open a bottle of Noilly Pratt Dry Vermouth; Breathe the word vermouth over the Beefeater; Stirred but not shaken in a chilled martini glass. Don't forget the olive. Vodka Martini & Gibson w/ a cocktail onion are mere pretenders. I was told this by a Churchill type Martini drinker. I, for one, tried a martini once and immediately vomited it back up!
