My UMass friend just told me Nelson has been hired as an assistant at UMass, taking Derek Kellogg’s position Who took a similar job at Creighton

Good for him. Might not even have to move if he doesn’t want to.

Good for him. Might not even have to move if he doesn’t want to. His commute from this area would be a minimum 1hr 20 minutes.... Close to 3 hrs/day per round trip.

Yeah, but has he not put his house up for sale? He likely knew he was leaving the area.
I wish him no ill will but glad he’s gone as he proved to be the worst HC men’s basketball coach in history.

Lots of non-highway driving to get from his home to Amherst, a classic "you can't get there from here" place, unfortunately.
Bad time to sell a house, would have been much better for him in that regard if he didn't make it to Year 4. Bet he keeps it a while.
Good luck to him, best for all concerned he's moved on.

It can't cost HC any money and possibly save money depending on what was left on his contract and what was agreed to at termination. Good luck Brett.

Your first statement is absolutely true but I don't agree with your second statement... he could put his house on the market and realistically make about $200,000.00 more than what he bought it for! Location, location, location! Also his son attends the Christian School. There are many really good private schools in the Amherst area. I wish him and his family all the best!!!

Whitinsville Christian? That's a good basketball school but the route from Whitinsville to Amherst would be Rte 146 to the Mass Pike to either Palmer or Rte. 91. That's a long drive.

Yes, Whitinsville Christian (Alex and Justin Vander Baan) and his son is a very good basketball player, likely in the seventh/eighth grade. Yes, it is indeed a long drive, maybe longer going route 9!

Nice landing spot for Nelson.
It’s possible he doesn’t have to relocate, is in a more realistic and comfortable role as a coach, and probably getting decent money.

Best of luck. I am glad it worked out for him. Nothing wrong with living in the Pioneer Valley if that is what he and his family want. If he lives south of Amherst, he can get to Bradley a lot quicker than he got to Boston or Providence. Obviously, we don't know if his wife works near Worcester or even to the east which would affect their decisionmaking.

Good for Brett, I wish him well in future endeavors. Hopefully this is getting us a rebate on his buyout.

I wish Brett Nelson and his family all the best. Disappointed things did not work out much better at HC. I’m sure he tried his best.

I have no doubt that BN was a good assistant coach at Marquette. Some guys are good coaches, but not necessarily good head coaches. I wish him well.

Like I wish for all people that work at rival companies: I hope they all lose their jobs and quickly find new ones in an unrelated field doing half the work, making twice the money, and being twice as happy.

Well, as for me, I hope we get UMass on the schedule next season and beat the cr@p out of them and Brett's former players can have a big smile during their post game handshake line. But, that's just me.

A 200K increase in the value of the home, or thereabouts; is certainly within reason even with the market having peaked a year ago.
I think they'd have to pay a capital gain tax on the home because he wasn't there 5 years, unless I am not reading it right.
That and a broker's fee and the increase in the mortgage rates vis-a-vis his purchase in 2019, and it perhaps would not be a wise move.
Next summer would most likely be a better time to make a change.

Marcus Blossom stayed at his Boston area residence while working for HC, I believe. Of course Covid might have influenced putting off a move to Central MA.

And sometimes assistant coaches only stay a year at a school. 15-16 UMASS got destroyed 71-38 by 15-17 Richmond in the first round of the A-10 Tournament in an 11:30 AM game at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. The team still got lunch prices for their end of season post game meal. Frank Martin will be given a few years as the highest paid state employee but assistants don't have the same security.

He only has had to live in the house as his primary residence for 2 of the last 5 years. So clearly he qualifies on that count.
In addition, if Nelson and his wife own the house jointly the first $500,000 of the gain on the sale is non taxable.
