At 644-1183 for a .352 winning percentage, UNH ranks #467 among 490 teams who have played D-1 basketball. Note, however, that things have been looking up with the Wildcats at .500 or higher each of the past four seasons.

HC missed playing Curry during the BN era. Too bad, the Colonels would have added another school to the list of purple opponents.

Looks as if Cooley is continuing in the GTown tradition of out of conference opponents. Are these all home games ? Few sellouts.

Looks as if Cooley is continuing in the GTown tradition of out of conference opponents. Are these all home games ? Few sellouts. Nine of 11 are at home, but that's because of a one-sided agreement with the arena that mandates all non-conference home games at their building. That's a lot of money that has to go to rental payments and can't go to other sports like, well, football. FYI, the last sold out game (in or out of conference) was in 2013. None have really been close since. An example from last season versus Butler.

I would certainly enjoy a trip to DC, but 11/11 is reserved for the football game at Army.

My sellout term was being sarcastic. Looks like many cupcakes, in the grand tradition of JTIIIs it though? JT3's final four seasons had non-conference rankings inside the top 100. JT III was not afraid of playing on the road: at Oregon, at Michigan, at Illinois, at Duke... even at Navy, Old Dominion, and Fairfield (coached by a rookie HC named Ed Cooley). The present arena deal is very restrictive because they offer a handful of open dates not taken by the Wizards, Capitals, or other events (WWE, concerts) and told to find opponents. No Saturday night games, all weekend games start at noon, and weekday games at 6:00pm don't do much for commuters coming to the games nor for those teams traveling to DC. Clearly it would make as much or more sense to play Merrimack, HC, American, etc. on campus but that's not allowed under the deal. It's good to see HC on the schedule but the game is going up against the Army game on CBS Sports Network, so it won't be a point of attention to many fans. Cooley is working towards upgrading the schedule (looking to add Maryland, a new series with Notre Dame, etc.) With a recruit coming in 2024 from Worcester Academy, a game at the DCU would not be entirely out of the question, but road games are almost exclusively driven by TV.

JTII(2) is JT3’s dad Cupcake city for OOC games St. Leo was always my favorite and a running joke for almost two decades after the "series" ended. The St. Leo story goes back to John Thompson's second season, when he was looking for teams to play and Norm Kaye, the St. Leo coach, took him up on the offer. St. Leo traveled on its own to DC and lost 66-58 but Thompson was impressed enough by their effort that he offered them a guarantee game as long as he was coach, which makes a difference at Div. II schools. Kaye told the Tampa Times that the school netted about $20,000 each year on the game. The games weren't competitive and Georgetown won all 16 in the series, but the offer was made available every season and St. Leo accepted more times (16) than declined it (nine). The last game was in 1997. A lot of scheduling is about relationships between coaches and it's encouraging that Paulsen and Cooley were able to make this happen.

Oh, sure, the opponent was always willing, by definition. When I was a very young lad in the late 50s and into the early 70s, St. Bonaventure had a regular set of Washington Generals. There was the Al McGuire coached Belmont Abbey, Villa Madonna (later known as St. Thomas More), Detroit College, and others. Holy Cross had its own set of clay pigeons.
But, I don't think anyone got as defensive about it as John Thompson.

No, for all sports other than football, there were the "University" division and the "College" division; essentially D1 and everybody else. But, you could pick and choose by sport. Bucknell, for example, played basketball in the university division but its swimming team was in the college division. The teams I noted above were all college division basketball schools.

It looks like this “crowd” could have fit into McDonough Gymnasium - if it’s still in existence.
