I don't follow the NHL since my third tour of duty on Long Island when the Islanders played in the Nassau Coliseum, but just saw this headline blurb from the NY Times:
I certainly knew there were NHL teams in places where they never get ice in 100 years (ever? since the Ice Age?) but, really, two non-ice teams in the finals?
Yeah, I also know they play indoors and it's man-made ice in the arenas. But, when the temperature outside is 80, 90, 100 degrees outside and then you go inside and watch ice hockey, strikes me as funny.

We always hear about "growing the game." I looked at the USA Hockey website to see state by state registrations. In Florida, they have 18,725 total registrations but more than 10,000 are for adults 19 and over. Only about 1600 9 and 10 year olds play. Nevada has a total of 5342, of whom 2300 are adults and 687 are 9 and 10. Compare this to Massachusetts where there are almost 47000 registrants of whom only 4700 are adults and where there are 6600 9 and 10 year olds playing. Populations are 21 million for FL, 3.1million for NV and 7 million for MA. I understand that FL and NV probably skew older. These teams have succeeded but they aren't growing the game (which obviously would require building rinks.) www.usahockey.com/membershipstats |

A bit seriously (a bit, not too much), one of my younger neighbors from LI. now "old" at 60, has a FL winter home and played hockey on LI until covid and seriously thinking of taking it back up in Fl.
