Ooh engineering major. I wonder if he's planning on doing the 4/1 with WPI We don't have a 4-1 with RPI. We have a 3-2 with Columbia.
Yes we do have a 4-1 with WPI. This is a new program established by the HC administration. So yes this young man can take engineering classes at WPI.

My bad, I didn't know it had been implemented yet. I thought it was still in progress. Both schools' websites still show that it is at the MOU stage.

I believe incoming frosh DE Gabe Erhuanga is also very interested in the 4-1 program with WPI focusing on engineering. This very well could have helped us land him over Lehigh where he visited the week before.
Having more custom and flexible degrees while still being rooted in high quality liberal arts are a plus for the school and athletics programs.

If we had the option to red shirt, programs like this would help us compete more closely against the FCS schools with on campus grad programs.

With the portal, players that play in 4 or fewer games in any season will have a Red shirt year. Would rather them use it at HC with some sort of 4-1 consortium with a Worcester metro University (in addition to the double major potential already in place)than a FCS competitor.

It wouldn't work with a 4-1 program such as the one with WPI. The player could redshirt and have a fifth year. But in the 4-1 model the player would be enrolled full-time in that fifth year in the grad engineering program at WPI. He wouldn't be eligible at HC but he would be at WPI.

So HC poffers for more red shirt grad programs at another grad school in service to HC athletics. Seems to me like the tail is wagging the dog.

In its current form, correct. I’m willing to make an educated call that Kit, Chesney and now Curran were/are working with the relevant administrators to find a workable solution…time will tell if it’s possible but again this isn’t for 2025. 2024 frosh will be 5th yeard in 2028 which is crazy to think about.

You make it sound like these programs were constructed with athletics in mind. Nothing is further from the truth. The fact that it could potentially benefit athletics is what’s being discussed here. You think Vince went into these meetings thinking “how can I make this work so I can have 5th year OL playing against SDSU in the quarterfinals in 2028…” Did the announcement re WPI even mention athletics?

It will still provide a useful option. I doubt we have all that many athletes who are math/physics majors and want to get a masters in engineering. Currently, those that do have to get the bachelors from us and then do two years in a grad engineering program, a 4-2. Some of them will choose the new 4-1 option. It will save them one year of grad school tuition. But a few may choose to redshirt, do a fifth year here and then do the one at WPI, a 5-1, especially if they're on scholarship the fifth year.

Seems like a great offering by the school, given that we don't have an engineering program. Maybe you think football players shouldn't be able to take advantage of it? Weird.

TBT I was reacting to comments about the 4-1 grad programs being useful to help HC compete with other FCS programs. Implication HC grad programs w/another school should be pursued to benefit the football team w/ a red shirt. 4-1 with a Masters is a wonderful option for some students. Period. No need to get defensive about football. No big deal.

Do you know that Colgate is a university only because it has a graduate education program?

Do you know that Colgate is a university only because it has a graduate education program? More scandalous than "Deflate gate". That would be an easy thing for HC to duplicate. Maybe provide some help and share resources with the remaining beleaguered Catholic schools in the area.

As I posted some time back, a master's degree in counseling (school and/or mental health counseling) could be useful to HC graduates and, having helped to start such degrees at Mercy in NY, would not be diffcult to start.
