Well done. I assume that TPTB are very happy with this total.

Fabulous, but only equal to ten four year full scholarships. That illustrates HC's struggle to compete over 27 sports against D-1 Schools with half the sports and five to ten times the number of student activity fees and tuitions to pay for athletics and less expensive full scholarships to fund. The PL is our safe space for minor sports.
The CAF started as a fund for "extras" but like most things it is probably now counted on to meet many expenses that aren't necessarily extra.
I give the current AD and staff credit for addressing the revenue sports where HC has the resources to compete and am sure they will get the most out of this year's CAF haul and spread it across as many sports as possible.

The CAF is not used to fund scollies, or coaches compensation. I believe most of the monies are for items in the operating expenses category, and recruiting.

What does HC spend the $3 million on that they don't have to spend on operating expenses and recruiting due to spending the CAF on that? A major expense that has been added since the CAF began and since it has gained steam is Women's hockey scholarships and possibly additional men's hockey scholarships. Of course there have been a myriad of other increased expenses also.

After some communication with a well-regarded HC assistant coach (who shall remain nameless) who said that while he loved HC, his compensation was such that he thought he might be forced to leave for a higher paying position, I communicated with the appropriate staff whether my CAF/Gridiron Club funds could go directly for assistant coach compensation as this was immediately after Coach Chesney's contract was extended/revised presumably for a higher salary.
Here was the answer that I got back:
The assistant in question did leave for a much higher paying position but my impression was not because HC didn't offer him a bump in salary but rather because the gig he got just pays a LOT more (maybe more than Chesney gets?).

What if a head coach's top priority is higher compensation for the head coach?

From a financial management / budgeting standpoint, using the CAF to pay for the costs of a scollie or a coach's compensation is a one-year deal. There is no assurance that the CAF will have sufficient donations in year two to ensure that the scollie continues to be funded, or a coach is compensated at the year one level. Excuse my use of Federal budget terms, but a scollie and an employee's contractual compensation would be categorized as mandatory spending. The purchase of lights for Fitton would be categorized as discretionary. Purchase of brand new winter coats for the football team in the event a game is played @ Montana State in -30 wind chill would be categorized as discretionary. The CAF is primarily used for discretionary expenses, plus recruiting. In 2021, recruiting expenses men's sports: Brown $628K Colgate $429K HC $351K Dartmouth $890K Fordham $758K Georgetown $1252K !!!!!!!!!!! Harvard $872K Lafayette $325K Lehigh $248K Richmond $323K Villanova $325K For comparison, BC spent $1151K That said, bonuses that are not contractual could be paid out of CAF . for example, football beats BC by 17 points. KH could decide to reward the coaches for the great triumph by awarding $250,000 in non-contractual bonus money for the coaches, that bonus money coming from the CAF.

Georgetown must be making reparation payments out of it's recruiting budget. Big East recruiting surely requires a big budget but maybe they also have to spend more than other PL teams for football recruiting because they don't have scholarships to do part of the recruiting heavy lifting.

While Villanova is spending 1/4 of Georgetown and has been more successful on the men's and women's side in basketball.

I suspect GU's recruiting spending is so high because the coaches are chartering jets for their trips. Heck, they could be leasing an aircraft. or paying for fractional ownership.

😊 On my “to-do” list when I win the MegaMillions: buy a corporate jet to be based in Worcester for Chesney, Paulsen, Magarity, et. al. to do their recruiting in first class. Will also endow a history position in my father’s name. Maybe lights for Fitton but first priority there is renovate and expand the ladies rooms. 😂

Most of that figure is in men's basketball. Football's recruiting figure is low by comparison to other PL schools.

Logically it should be higher as the model could need more selling and the net might need broader casting. Hopefully GU has a good presentation down spelling out the advantages of football at GU as opposed to at a scholarship school, and has become skilled at identifying the type of player and family the model is a good fit for.
