I don’t have the band insights that hc16 as former member or 8485 as father of 2 former band members, but know one of the current members and believe they struggle to get and keep band members.
Really too bad especially now that the College has a much greater emphasis on the performing arts than decades ago.
If I understand correctly from the mother of the current band member, they tried to get a kid into the band who is an excellent artist but he seemed to think the band was beneath his talents (my words/interpretation). Guess he’s a musician, not a marching band member though they seem to do a lot less marching than years past.

I will say the acoustics inside the stadium aren't what one would call optimal. It also affected what you could hear the pa announcer say; either that or their sound system is bad as well. |

Depended probably on where you were sitting. We were on about the 25 yard line on the visitor side and they were in the corner to our left. I could see but not especially hear them. The band is both small and not very loud even in Fitton. They disappeared during the weather break and then my wife pointed them out having moved to the opposite end zone to be with the rest of the students. They are trying and I feel for them.

BTW, the girl I know in the band is through her mother (our PCP). Mom/doc, has an older son who goes to WPI. Her analysis was: "I'm very surprised that WPI's football team is not very good but their band is large and terrific. Holy Cross' football team is great but their band is so small" (and by implication, not so good, despite her daughter in the band - a sophomore). I've never seen nor heard the WPI band but considering it is an engineering school and we are liberal arts with music majors (I assume), it is surprising our band is not larger.

The culture shows that 30-40 kids interested in their sports team to create an atmosphere are "other" sports besides football. You can hear a pin drop at a Holy Cross game unless the football team decides to show up after practice... |

Team list 1 nil today to Laffy on a direct kick from about 25 years at the end of the first half.
They knocked the ball around nicely, and look better. As they add speed and quickness to the roster they will get better.
