There will be no bruiser role this season. I would not be surprise to see Kirkwood potentially step into that role as a bruiser. Based on seeing him recently, with a warrior mindset…… Time will tell how the coaching staff will see his role.

I'm old fashioned. I like having a guy I can give the ball to down low who will get off and hit a high percentage of his shots from the low post. Although short for that role, Gates filled it admirably.

I think Kirkwood has a lot of upside but if he becomes a “bruiser” I think it would be a different kind of bruiser than GG. I do understand that JK was just a freshman last year and likely was given a specific role to play and different playing instructions than he might receive from Coach Paulsen. Based on frosh year stats JK might be the most infrequent shooter in HC history. Compare him to GG:
Gates 16.1 FGA per 40 minutes 5.9 free throw attempts per 40–obviously driven by the FGA
Kirkwood 2.8 FGA per 40 minutes 0.6 FTA per 40

A low post presence is not required for wins, but having the option of a low post presence can make it easier

I predict Caleb Kenney will have a good first year under DP and give us at least some of what we want out of a “big” at our level.
