What was much more egregious than this sequence in Yale was the final score against Merrimack. That toed the line of "running it up" insofar as we could have elected to kneel the ball a couple of times and the game would have been over. IIRC, Merrimack had one timeout remaining and they showed no signs of using it. The white flag had been waved.
Merrimack turned the ball over on downs with 2:36 left. Sluka ran for 19 yards on first down, followed by a Clerveaux run to the Merrimack 23 yard line with 1:39 remaining.
Chesney could have ended the game with two kneel downs, but ended up giving the ball to Fuller for one more touchdown.
Scoring the final touchdowns against Merrimack and Yale tells me Chesney knows the importance of putting up some scores that are more lopsided.

I remember when Patriots fans used to blindly trust in BB…. Why the continual subtle (and not so subtle) criticisms in one of the best coaches in the country? I think you misinterpreted my post. I have great confidence in Coach Chesney. Always have. This thread and my comment were simply to point out that history tells us that no one should be blindly followed. Thus far, Coach Chesney is doing all the right things.

If we lose to them we get punished and we win by 20 plus the voters say that was expected As it should be. We're the #6 team in the country and most of us think we should be 4/5. We should easily beat every FCS team we play this season, including Fordham. Fordham deservedly gets credit for their FBS win. But UB may not win a game this year and Fordham got smoked by a CAA bottom feeder. We shouldn't get extra credit for easily beating teams we should easily beat. On the other hand, if we lose to one of them we should drop.

Another thing to consider: South Dakota State scored on a 21-yard pass with 0:39 remaining to go up by 21. In the Merrimack game, we were keeping the ball on the ground and they couldn't stop us.
Furthermore, If I read Chesney lips correctly, at the post-game handshake with Stiegelmeier, Chesney said, "I would have done the same thing."
No right answers, no wrong ones.

Big difference was that we were continuing to call timeouts in an effort to get the ball back. SDSU also ran the ball on 2nd and 3rd down. Had they run the ball on 4th and turned it over on downs, the clock would have stopped. So, it's not like they could have run the clock out anyways whether they passed or ran.

Every coach in the country would have done the same thing. They were up by 14 and needed at least a first down to keep us from getting the ball back. They decided to throw for it and the TD route opened up. In that situation you take what the defense gives you.

I had no problem with Merrimack, we didn't throw any passes, and no trick plays, they gave up half the field on three standard HC running plays. Then their coach talked about his team playing well in one half but later below their capabilities without any mention that maybe HC played poorly in the first half of their first game and played up to their level in half two. But he "complimented" a couple of HC players for their doggedness despite their lack of dynamism.

I don't think our D has shown yet that we can stop a very good offence and it takes one good defensive effort like Laffy last year to beat us. We could get outscored more likely than get stopped as Lafayette did imo.

Assuming there will be improvement every week and hopefully we’re pretty good by November/December.

I’m not so sure we will be held down on O. Yes we can be outscored but it will take mid 30s to do that.

I don’t know if we’re the most talented offensive FCS team in the country but I’d guess were the toughest to prepare for. I mean, there’s just no way to replicate what Sluka can do in practice. All these teams come out with a plan to contain his running and they just can’t do it on Saturday.

No matter which side of the argument you’re on, it’s nice that we’re having this discussion.
It wasn’t long ago the argument was whether or not we should drop football as it wasn’t worth the investment.

The top 10-15 FBS maybe wouldn't mind but we aren't there yet. One thing for sure is if a game against an FBS opponent isn't on the schedule we are going to be forced up a level for the next couple of years if we are looking for buy games.

I would like to see our guys hold opponents to 17 points or fewer. If we do that and score 40 plus points, we make the point that we dominate without putting up numbers that some might find unseemly. Alum, I agree. HC has scored in the 40s and opponents have scored in low 20s in our 2 victories. HC is hardly scoring in the 60s or 70s that we have seen in college football games this year. During the HC-Yale game thread, I posted: Pound them and make them cry uncle! This was said in jest as we were finally-the last few years-exerting dominance over Yale. However, several sensitive posters took offense and proceeded to complain about running up the score and commenters extended the thread for several pages. Do they ever see ND’s scores which are mainly lopsided in their victories over weaker opponents? I rest my case and say continue to pound our opponents with the aforementioned target scores you and I agree upon. Jouts—-Looks like we got what we wanted today.

I would say that winning by 40 is just fine when the opposition was chippy from early in the game. especially the way they were targeting Sluka low and trying to pull/roll his legs. I'd say that should be a 15 yarder but I digress. NY Cru, I'd like to see some more P5 buy games in the next little bit. Syracuse will be a tall task next year with graduation, but hopefully significantly closer than the last edition.

Glad to see HC pull the starters & run the ball rather than running up the score into the 50's or 60's as they could have easily done.

I like the forward thinking. Unfortunately, in the year 2929 everything you think, do and say will be in the pill you took today.

I'd hope that we might get another crack at fellow New England programs UConn and BC later in the decade. Or UMass, or Army again. Not as many fans will get the chance to travel to the MAC opponents or San Jose, although NIU could be an excuse for a Chicago trip. I think we're free in '27 and '28 and hope we get some local FBS opponents. In all likelihood, Chesney is gone by then and I have no expectation ever to see a HC-BC football game as close as the one we attended 2 weeks ago. But those games against the New England programs should continue at least a couple times per decade hopefully.
