A great flashback to that great hit by Bucky "f**kin'" Dent.

I was at Fitton a few weeks prior during the Boston Massacre. They announced the score of the Yanks beating the Sox, and there were mostly cheers from the stands. We might have been in Worcester, but HC students were more from NY and NJ than MA. At least the ones who go to football games. Sometimes cheaters do win. Random side note - On behalf of the players, Captain Yaz went to Zimmer and begged him to start Bill Lee in that game. Lefty Lee always pitched well against the Yankees and would have given the Sox the best chance for the win, but Zimmer refused because Lee had embarrassed him in the local press. Zimmer put his ego above good of the team

I guess Zimmer didn't like being named The Gerbil.
Zimmer didn't have much use for Lee's gang, known as The Loyal Order of Buffalo Heads (named with Zimmer in mind, if I recall correctly). Included Lee, Jim Willoughby, Rick Wise, Ferguson Jenkins and maybe Bernie Carbo.
That game....ugh

My daughter spent the summer being the manager of an ice cream store called Holy Cow; thought of Scooter often in recent months. My lasting memories of that playoff game were twofold: 1) Bob Bailey, a Zimmer favorite, seeing three pitches down the middle from Goose Gossage, never taking the bat off his shoulders, completely overmatched. Carbo was traded in June for a minor leaguer and the Sox spent zero money shoring up their bench after the season started. 2) Lou Piniella grabbing Remy's line drive base hit at the last second; the ball would have rolled to the bullpen and the game would have been tied w/Remy on third.

My brother (HC, '83) had his Holy Cross admissions interview that day. Campus was pretty still that day - outside of the dorms. Not sure where he was when Bucky hit the HR, but he describes the agony and the ecstasy heard intermittently from the dorms as he walked across campus with my parents and maybe (?) a tour following the interview.

I was a junior in high school. I heard the home run as I got in a friend's car for the ride home after practice. I was home in time to see Nettles settle under Yaz's popup to end it.
I would rank the Dent home run as the second most horrible moment in my life as a Sox fan falling after the Buckner error and ahead of the Boone home run.

Totally used a corked bat; 1. He fouls a pitch off his foot 2. Of course, when you foul a pitch off your foot the bat boy has to hand you a new bat, for some reason 3. Hit then hits a fly ball that everyone thought was an out, but for some reason just kept carrying over the wall
But, whatever, we’ve had a good century so far

I thought the bat was broken which is why he switched. This lucky bat also helped him win the World Series MVP that year

The Sox exacted their revenge in spades, at least at the Cross, in 2004, my freshman year. The celebrations after Game 7 on Easy Street were the closest Mt. St. James has likely seen to bacchanalia. The tension that built over those last four games of the ALCS on campus was a crucible Arthur Miller could not have conjured up. I was lucky enough to be in the "lyrical little bandbox" for Game 5.

I am in the "he never should have started the inning," club. The analytics said he should be removed. He was visibly tiring. It is generally better to bring in a reliever to start the inning.

I had an evening meeting in Hogan the night of game 6. Some of my fellow alums wanted to watch a few innings in the pub after the meeting. Having spent the four prior evenings in Fenway I was an exhausted mess and didn't want to head down , but got talked into it. Adrenalin from just watching the game kicked in and I stayed to the final out. Silly side note - there was a small group of seniors in the pub that night. We wound up making friends. Those seniors realized we were meeting every 3rd Tuesday and were at the pub when the doors opened for the rest of the school year. Not sure if they liked conversing with alumni or if they realized that alumni with jobs would pick up the bar tab

As a long-time Yankee fan, I admit I was sad (and a bit sick) watching the Yanks lose each of those 4 games. However, I was pleased to see the joy of Sox fans with each win. I have always respected Sox fans, which is probably one of the reasons why I enjoy Yankee wins so thoroughly. Regardless of places in the division standings, I enjoy every Red Sox/Yankee game. Thanks to the Sox and all Sox fans for that.

You know the Sox kind of put a lot of those demons to rest by winning a bunch of World Series but they're still a crappy memory of failure when it counted.

The Sox won four World Series since then. Each was great and fun in their own way. That doesn't change the fact that the guy with the corked bat is still named Bucky #$@&^*!ing Dent

Always been a casual Yankee fan. My luck, a neighbor called HoJos (my dorm then) looking for me in 1978, as he had an extra bleacher ticket. Got the message, and witnessed Bucky Dent’s home run. Fast forward to 2003, Sox pitching coach, Dave Wallace, is from my hometown. A pal scoffed several tix from him and I sat behind home plate with mostly Sox wives and family and watched Boone’s home run. Got to think that other than me and Don Zimmer, very few people witnessed both home runs!
