He was one tough SOB. Disciplined teams, undisciplined behavior. Stated he wanted to be buried upside down so his critics could "kiss my ass." 900+ wins. Where does Knight rank in the constellation of basketball coaches? Sui generis?

Pro- 3 National Championships, 902-371 at 3 schools, most at Indiana, no NCAA violations, very high player graduation rate. Con- fired at Indiana for physical abuse of.a player and verbal abuse of players and workers at Indiana. Some horrendous quotes about women, including one on national television.
I saw him when he was at West Point (with Mike K.) playing at Fordham, coached by former Ram great, Ed Conlin. When he became enraged over a ref’s call, Knight kicked over a water cooler which flooded the court. In the long time it took to dry the floor, Conlin approached him to criticize Knight’s action. Knight confronted the much bigger Conlin and the two coaches brawled until multiple assistants restrained Knight. it was the only time I have seen two coaches fist fight during a game

I put him right up there with Jim Boeheim as one of the most unlikeable college basketball coaches.
Topping even Jim Calhoun of “not one thin dime” fame.
But, the common denominator seems to be “not nice guys finish first” or close to it.

Would any of our retired HC b-ball players have wanted to play for Bobby Knight?

May that SOB's soul rest in peace. He knew basketball but was as others said one of the most unlikeable men in the sport.

A former neighbor of mine started on the last championship Indiana team that Knight coached. He said the verbal abuse was off the charts. After he graduated, though, he would get a birthday card from Knight and an occasional phone call to see how he was doing. He was a man of contradictions.

Going way back, Bob Knight was a sub on that awesome Ohio State University team of 1960 (Jerry Lucas, John Havlicek). He missed overlapping with (RIP) Frank Howard at OSU by a year or two.

No question that he knew basketball and coaching, BUT, his excesses got him fired. He was regularly guilty of outrageous behavior and lying to others. Just my opinion, but those are not signs of the "greatest" anywhere I know of. Ask the Yeshiva coach about his promises and what they are worth (from his time at West Point).

I have no idea what Yeshiva story from 60 years ago you're talking about but for every bad guy Bob Knight story you can counter with Ryan White, Landon Turner, etc. Was he an ass a lot of times....yes. Was he a relic of days gone by.....yes. Could he survive in today's AAU basketball garbage pit........absolutely not. No one coached college basketball better than he did.

Daryl Brown, Fordham '75, drafted by the Celtics, was quoted about Denzel. But Daryl's best story was about the first recruiting letter he received from Bobby Knight in 1970. Because it was sent from the U.S. Military Academy he thought it was a draft notice so he didn't open it for two weeks.

For the youngsters who did not know the "Yeshiva story" here it is in quick summary. Coach Knight called Yeshiva for a scrimmage and the coach told him that with no scholarship players and little or no height that they coukd not be a serious test for the Cadets. Knight persisted and the coach agreed to a "small" scrimmage at West Point...small in that there were to be no officials or spectators and it would be strictly a learning experience. Knight agreed to that but when Yeshiva came out of their locker room they are greeted by the Army band and the full corps of cadets packing the stands. There were also officials. Knight told the coach, "This is how we are doing this. Deal with it." The game condition scrimmage started and at the first time out - with Army ahead and Yeshiva yet to score, Knight looked around as his team returned to the court and Yeshina had left. Yeshiva did "deal with it" and that coach never had a good word to say about Knight after the way he had been lied to.

I’ve previously posted of an Army scrimmage against HC in our dearly departed fieldhouse.
Won’t post it again and others here besides me may have been in attendance.
I will leave it as I was impressed none of the cadets punched him out.
Believe I read he is #5 in total college wins. “Successful” but not “best” college coach in history.
Do wonder if the family will entertain his wishes and bury him a$$ up? For sure it would show his best side.😂

Questions: Was Knight generally well liked by other coaches within the coaching fraternity? Would Knight have been a good choice to coach at HC? Obviously, he was a complicated man. A man whose behavior was undisciplined, yet taught highly disciplined basketball. Evidently. most of his players were loyal & liked him. Was there a fear factor? Did he express any remorse to friends or family for his unacceptable behavior? (eg at Rose Hill; In Puerto Rico; During practices, etc.) Fascinating. Would not be surprised if eventually there is a film about him, not a mere recitation of his highs & lows, but an in-depth study of his interior landscape. There are lots of layers to unwrap. His life/career would provide a rich source for speculation. I never understood his rage.

Psychotic, abhorrent, disgusting behavior? Would not let him near any child of mine. Don't know who the hell he thought he was that he could bully & disrupt a game with his outrageous antics such as throwing chairs on the court, screaming at other people. He was lucky he did not land up in the hospital. Guess others dd not want to sink to his level. Woody Hayes on steroids. There was nothing old school about his behavior especially compared to John Wooden & other great coaches & fine men of that era. RIP.

He never had a losing record for a season at Indiana. He is very similar to Bill Parcells very tough demanding.
Knight was Coach K's teacher.
Parcells was Belichick's teacher.
Both students won more titles then their mentor.
RIP to a legend! Although how many college students on campuses across America even know who Knight was? Besides maybe the guy who threw the chair?

Thought it was my freshman year but your comment brought back in my memory banks that part of the issue was our much taller team with Easy Ed and big Ronnie T. Maybe my sophomore year and you were gone by then. Ed and Ron couldn't play varsity until '67. Yeah, had to be '67.

But in the class of ‘69, Ed and Ron played in the ‘66-‘67 season as sophs. They would have been juniors in the fall of ‘67 for the scrimmage.

Feinstein wrote an excellent piece. He caught both sides of Knight...a great coach, but at times a flawed human being.
