The Massachusetts Pirates have announced that they will be leaving Worcester and relocating to Lowell. The indoor football team had played its home games at the DCU Center since 2018. The move follows a well worn pattern for professional sports teams in the city. Many local teams have in the past initially started out well but the shine quickly wears off with attendance and interest declining with each continuing season.

Which was still some 2,000 less than the average attendance during best years in Pawtucket when the team played in a then 60 year old venue. The PawSox had a 50 year run in Pawtucket and the P-Bruins have been in Providence for over 30 years. Has a Worcester team ever had a tenure approaching either of them? The reality is no professional team has ever made Worcester its home for an extended long period of time.

Worcester never had a Boston affiliated franchise. Has any non-Boston affiliated franchise ever survived in Rhode Island? Hope the Pirates succeed in Lowell, they need a smaller venue with cheaper rent. Wish them the best.

Wow, team has been gone for 50 years then you had to steal a franchise from Portland according to RFLoser standards.

Bump- saw this tidbit in an article about the Bravehearts in today's Telegram (unable to copy the article because of the paywall).
"As an aside, with their 11th season, the Bravehearts will tie the Worcester IceCats as the longest running organized sports team in the history of Worcester."

Holy Cross giving back to the community bigly. Also HC getting complimentary usage of part of it's marvelous facilities. I assume HC gives the Bravehearts a great deal but hopefully still generates some net rental income. Holy Cross doesn't get enough credit for this successful partnership compared to the celebration of the WooSox placing Worcester in a 30 year yoke of debt. I believe that would be called a "rear naked choke" in the UFC.🙂 (Thanks ESPN+)

I ASSUME that the remaining years on that agreement were an asset of the bankrupt Torndadoes that could have been sold to pay off the team's debts. I have also ASSUMED that the Bravehearts bought that asset for short money and the school is not getting rental money

Makes the case that minor league teams in Worcester have been caught in a BN level revolving door. The Railers and Bravehearts appear to be owned by successful business persons who have a commitment to Worcester. The WooSox are financially subsidized by the city, so those three franchises may have solved the revolving door puzzle. Interesting that while the Railers and WooSox both play in city owned buildings, the Railers didn't get anywhere near the sweetheart deal the baseball team did. I assume the Railers pay market rate at the DCU Center and their owner has invested millions of private dollars to build a multi-rink hockey center downtown that I don't recall receiving any more government assistance than what any new building in that location would get.

You cannot compare the Bravehearts with any of the other teams mentioned above. They are a college all star team. Lower level Cape League style. To the Creedon's credit they have run it like a minor league team and many who have no idea of baseball think they are a minor league organization.

Someone will be sad to hear there is a local buyer lined up with plans to keep the team at Fitton.

Interesting to ponder that BOTH ownership groups of the two baseball teams in Worcester decided to sell within 60 days of each other.

Not all Worcester area businesses are closing or leaving town. Last spring, while sporting some HC gear during pickleball play at East Naples Park in Naples, FL, I met a fellow named Ben Minsk from Shrewsbury. Within the next two weeks, Ben will open a new 8 court indoor pickleball emporium on Rte. 12 in West Boylston. If you’re a pickleball player or interested in learning how to play, I encourage you to check it out, have some fun and pour a few $$ into the Worcester area economy.
