I caught the last 5 minutes of the Dayton-LSU game from Charlotte in what I believe is called the Charlotte Classic. Dayton came back from a 15 point deficit in the last 10 minutes to win. Dayton fans of all ages packed the lower bowl and their band was there in large numbers. What an atmosphere they created. I caught the beginning of the game after their game, Houston vs Towson, and the place was 1/3 full with zero energy. Dayton has to have some of the best fans in college basketball. The Flyers are playing St. John’s, btw, for a trip to the championship game.

There's a reason the PIGs are in Dayton.

Charleston, not Charlotte. espnevents.com/charleston-classic/bracket/Old fashioned 8 team tournament like the old Rainbow Classic (see brackets). This is the kind of tournament HC should aspire to get invited to.

The University of Dayton is always among the top programs in the nation each year for average home attendance of some 13k. They basically sell out every home game at UD Arena. Flyer fans also travel well in large numbers, especially to MTE and A-10 Tournaments.
As an FYI, the Dayton area supports ALL its local sports teams. The Dayton Dragons, a Single A team, had the second highest average home attendance (7,885) in ALL of minor league baseball. Only the AAA Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs of the International League outdrew them with 105 fans per game more.
The sports culture of the Dayton area is why the NCAA Tournament stages all its play in round games in the city year after year.

What else you going to do in Dayton besides attend sporting events? ;-)

Dayton population 137K, Worcester population 205K. If HC MBB had a four-peat NCAA run like football, would the city respond in any way close to how Dayton responds to the Flyers?
I also wonder why Catholic Dayton is in the A-10 and not the Big East?

Well, that’s true considering I don’t think any PL team plays in a place that can fit more than about 4,000.

Yeah, Worcester would be happy to let us have free use of that and any conflicting events would defer to the Crusaders. Maybe HC hockey there too, right?

I believe there was a hypothetical question in regards to Worcester drawing 13,000 fans per game like Dayton does. My point is no Patriot League team ever will. Scheduling the DCU Center is another matter.

Knew a young guy who had been an unpaid assistant for the Dayton basketball team . He pointed out that Dayton basketball had a much larger budget for coaches, recruitment, facilities, etc than HC. Budget for recruiting, facilities etc was bigger. Also, Dayton is a different type of school than HC. The school can offer a larger array of classes which are attractive to students. Dayton b-ball has a larger following, possibly because of its tradition of good basketball, Donnie May, Obi Toppin, etc.. It's a bigger program than HC. St. Mary's College of Moraga California is another highly successful program a step up from Dayton. Winning breeds success.

Speaking of Dayton, Worcester and the DCU Center, I was at the December 2007 game when Holy Cross played Dayton AT the DCU Center. Exciting game!

I highly doubt it. Just look at baseball in the two cities for an example. The Single A Dayton Dragons who play in a 20+ year old venue are outdrawing the Triple A Worcester Red Sox who play in a new downtown arena in a much larger city. One would think that a fairly new arena at a higher baseball level in a larger city would automatically translate to greater support. That however is not the case with these two cities.
As for Dayton not being in the BE, it is thought that Xavier is much against their membership. It supposedly has market concerns as the distance between the schools is only some 50 miles. Despite their long history of games going back a centrury, Xavier will not even schedule OOC games with Dayton since it left the A-10 for the BE.

The Big East has limited reason to want to expand. Doing so dilutes the proceeds each school would receive from the Fox Sports contract. The economic incentive to expand upon conference memberships and media markets in football isn't nearly as much there in basketball. And the Big East, of course, is 100% driven by basketball.

Ohio was at the Hart. Kyle Cruze went coast to coast for a game winning layup.
Was also at the Dayton game. Came close; that would have been a great win.

'cept SMC does it with an arena the size of the Hart Center (McKeon- capacity 3,500). And not a lot of TV revenue either, I would think. But a much better league!

HC played Xavier in 80-81 and 81-82, home and home (Hart Center, not DCU) Bob Staak was their coach at the time, a UConn guy. Plus, one other time, not sure if before or since. In any case, HC's record vs the Musketeers is the same as HC's football record vs Georgia, 3-0.

You know, anyone not in New England would likely think that the main state university was in UMass Boston not in Amherst. 😊

No objective reason why HC can not be the equivalent of Dayton re " size of program " And, Donnie May aint Cousy, Heinsohn or Perry
