Just got word the Giants fired their OL coach, Bobby Johnson. As OL assistant, does that mean Chris can/will move up or is he considered part of the problem, not part of the solution, and gets let go too. Isn't Chris' "connection" to the Giants the head coach?
Thoughts?

From what I saw during this season, the Giants' offensive line did not perform well. Whether it is simply the quality of the players on the roster, or whether the coaching played a meaningful role (doubtful to me), someone more expert than I am would have to judge.

Thoughts? No chance he gets promoted to full time OL coach. The Giants OL was absolutely trash this season and several players regressed. At this point I'm just hoping they keep him around and consider Bobby as the main culprit.

I was afraid you or another poster would say that. That said, how much can a staff "coach up" linemen if others draft or trade for the players. In another words, if you start with a lack of talent, how much better can a coach or coaches make them? And, yes, that same question could be asked of Dave Paulsen or any other coach except they are the same people that recruit the players other than the ones they inherited.

Well the Giants OL had several players actually take steps back this year including their 1st round center. The line absolutely could not pick up a stunt block to save their lives this season, and they were a big part of like every Giants QB getting hurt this year. Plus, they cut Tyre Phillips in the preseason, he went to the Eagles practice squad, and came back a better OL. So while I dont think it's fair to say the players weren't at fault, the line coach(es) definitely had a hand in it. I think he'll be able to stick around since he's just an assistant, but I don't think he's necessarily safe right now

Could Chesney fit Chris in ? Would be interesting. I think Zar is Ches's OL coach and obviously Kennedy is the OC. I'm sure he could find a spot for Chris, but not sure where.

I’d guess if Chris has to move, he’d rather be a head coach, even at a D-2 school or OC at a FBS school. Chesney wouldn’t ditch Kennedy for Chris on pure ethical basis.

Coaching matters a lot. Had a classmate/friend (Ist Round NFL pick) who was an offensive lineman, won a Super Bowl ring w/ Lombardi's Packers & also later played for the NY Giants. Played 11 years in the NFL. More important, he is a truly outstanding, wonderful man. I asked him if Lombardi was different & if so in which way. He said, yes, Lombardi was able to get him to play at a higher level than he thought was ever possible for him to do. Lombardi did not merely lead. He inspired his players to greatness. No other coach approached Lombardi in that regard although there are plenty of good coaches in the NFL. The Giants line regressed. For this reason I worried this season for Chris Smith. We are all pulling for him.

Zar is definitely at JMU now too, so not sure where he slots into the coaching staff, but it would eliminate an additional spot for Smith.
