I am elated that graduating from Holy Cross was a priority for Matt Sluka. I am so happy for him. Now he can join Crossports and tell me that I am an idiot for writing the stuff I write. Of the big three, Sluka, Coker & Hansen. Will all graduate with a highly sought Holy Cross degree? CJ has already graduated. Coker and Sluka graduate in May. All players playing their 5th years somewhere else (Newman - Michigan State, Schon - Duke, Spence - JMU) will also graduate in May before reporting to their new destinations in June. Purdy and McMurtie (both JMU) both played their max years at HC and like CJ graduated in December. I am so happy to read this. Thank you.

Listening to my favorite Notre Dame podcast , I learned that Notre Dame has a couple of graduate transfers in the Sluka/Coker category (finishing undergrad degree at another school this semester). BUT they are on the Notre Dame campus observing spring practice (not permitted to participate in team practices and workout) while doing the remote option with their undergraduate schools. Of course they can work out on their own, bond informally with future teammates, and chat with football coaches at Notre Dame all semester.

Kind of weird that it purports to be a list of the top 10 returning players for UNLV. And the write-up makes it sound like he’s #2 on the list but he’s actually at #4.
4) Matthew Sluka, QB
It’s rare to put an FCS transfer in the top spot for a Group of Five school, especially when he hasn’t even won the starting job yet, but Sluka is that talented, and he has the coaching to be a superstar. Jayden Maiava struggled early last season but took his game to another level with time in the Go-Go system.
Sluka is a dynamic runner who put up over 3000 rushing yards at Holy Cross. He has a career 59-to-20 touchdown-to-interception ratio and took just 16 sacks last year. Theoretically, he should be lower on this list, but I’m not willing to leave the potential Mountain West Player of the Year out of the top 2.
There’s a chance fellow FCS transfer Hajj-Malik Willis wins the job. If he does, he could be this good as well.

The closest UNLV will play to HC this year is at Kansas on September 14. In 2023 they appeared on multiple networks and streaming sites but only once on ESPN+, an away game at UTEP. I hope to watch Matt play as many games as I can access next season. He has done everything right at Holy Cross and doesn't leave the cupboard bare at QB for HC. Plenty for Crusader fans to cheer for in the fall.

By all accounts, the transfer QB from Campbell has had a stellar spring concluding with a monster spring game yesterday. Matt will have to win the job in camp. He will have a role week 1 but by no means guaranteed he’s the starter.

If Matt doesn't win the starting QB position for the season opener, the staff would be crazy to leave him on the bench. He can contribute in multiple ways, all of which would make for great viewing. He's magic with the ball in his hands, how it gets there is limited only to the imagination.

If the Campbell kid ends up QB1, Matt will definitely get snaps and have his athletic skill set highlighted.

Good morning, HC Football family - I just wanted to thank all of you for your passion and commitment to HC Football and the team we have had over the past 4 years. My son is Luke Newman and I was lucky that another parent turned me onto this message board because I have learned so much from you about the history of the program and everything going on. Crusader football is in great hands and there is an awesome group of players that have been waiting for their chance and are ready to go! We will be lifelong fans and can't wait to see where it goes under Coach Curran!

We care about the overall well-being of our student-athletes. Luke & all the guys did not go to HC solely to play football. They went to the school for a first rate education and to help them to continue their growth from family onward to caring, honorable men for others. Holy Cross is the real deal. Thank you for sending your wonderful son Luke to the Cross not only for football but for who he is as a person. Luke is the real deal. From a lifelong alum,'67 to a lifelong fan.

I think Mr. Newman's post highlights why we are all a part of this message board. We may disagree on conferences or schedules, but ultimately everyone wants the best for HC and our student athletes. The Holy Cross experience is more than just a single class, a single athletic season, and results in one of the strongest degrees around. Looking forward to more good things to come from our program and more healthy debate in the coming year.
