There was Trapilo who played at BC in the '80s.....relative? I also wonder what Chesney was thinking yesterday. Like so much of life, things sometimes have a way of working out in the long run. Ray-Bans is much better situated at JMU moving forward than he would have been at BC imo. BC may be one of the toughest places at the FBS-level to coach for in the country right now. I got a feeling the NIL situation for JMU is better than it is at BC when you compare those schools to who they're competing with.

Compared to their peers I think that's spot on, but FHCBC said that JMUs NIL situation when he got there was comparable to Holy Cross, so I don't really think BC and JMU are all that close at the moment. Hafley had been doing a pretty nice job in the portal this offseason before he bailed.

So Chesney's observation is correct. The JMU athletic budget is underwritten by mandatory student fees. $2,362 for 2023-24. If I was a JMU alum, and I had paid $8,000 - $10,000 to support athletics during my four years there, I don't think I'd be too keen about supporting athletics as an alum.

Circling back, I just think it's going to be harder and harder for the BC's, Vandy's, Northwestern's et. al. to compete, recruit etc at the FBS level, particularly at the now P4 level....Hafley more than likely saw this and skedaddled....the timing of his departure is sort of odd though.

Not that odd when you recognize NFL jobs open now and he has NFL experience as an assistant coach.

My prediction is that those kinds of schools end up outside of what ends up being the "top division" of college football. A sort of "Magnolia League" with the likes of BC, Northwestern, Georgia Tech, Vanderbilt, Wake Forest, Duke, Syracuse and Pitt makes so much sense.

From Football Scoop:
Boston College head coach Jeff Hafley is leaving the program to become the defensive coordinator of the Green Bay Packers, according to a report Wednesday from ESPN. “He wants to go coach football again in a league that is all about football,” a source close to Hafley told ESPN. “College coaching has become fundraising, NIL and recruiting your own team and transfers. There’s no time to coach football anymore."

That quote is spot on, and represents what the top level of CFB/FBS has become- a minor league for the NFL

Has BC’s defense been that good ? It was the sideline that stopped Sluka, not the BC Defense.

You don't need as large a payroll to do well in the Sun Belt as you do in the ACC. BCs never going to be near the top of the ACC, as presently constituted, funds-wise.

BC Interruption makes their push for Bill O’Brien in a funny sort of way:
But if he would be satisfied with a big salary, low expectations, and a job close to home, then it’s harder to get a better fit than the gig in Chestnut Hill.

Yes - Steve Trapilo’s son. Sadly, his dad died of a heart attack several years ago.

I’m a HC fan but root for BC as well. The BC hate by some here is boring and just jealousy in disguise. BC is an excellent school an play real D-1 athletics. It’s very difficult for ANY school outside the SEC or Big 10 to compete for D-1 championships. Yeah, I know. Playing Bucknell in front of 5000 fans is way better than playing Clemson or Florida State. The academic elitism is phony as well. A Holy Cross degree is no better than one from BC. Sorry.

Wow--I'm feeling much older after seeing John Hurley with graying hair and four children (likely the cause of the gray hair)

I'm hearing Bill O'Brien's the main target; good move for BC if it happens. Might actually stay there if he's doing a decent job.

It's now official per 'bc interruption' site - O'Brien looks like a clear upgrade from Hafley

BC got their guy. Pay is good, expectations are pretty realistic, and he’s a Boston native. All BC has to do is play a softee OOC, pick off a couple of fellow ACC bottom-feeders, and finish bowl eligible. O’Brien can do that most/all years.
