Watching the #2 Iowa Hawkeyes playing Nebraska and Caitlin Clark just hit 1,000 in career assists. Only 5 other D-1 college women have hit that number. Clark's career average is 8 per game.
She's closing in on the all time D-1 women's scoring record and should break that next game.

Iowa lost a big lead and lost 82-79 - I think they wanted to win the game while not having Clark break the record. They took their foot of the gas, Clark was scoreless in the 4th qtr and they blew the game in the process

While it doesn't approach their women's basketball record crowd of 55K set at home earlier this year, Iowa did play in front of a nice crowd of 15K at Nebraska.

Yes and they’re not only piling in to see her play in person: Clark’s performances have become appointment viewing: Iowa’s game against Ohio State, broadcast on NBC on Jan. 21, was the most-watched regular-season women’s basketball game since 2010 (1.93 million viewers). Fox’s Super Bowl Sunday telecast of Iowa-Nebraska garnered 1.77 million viewers, making it the most-watched women’s basketball game in the history of Fox Sports and the second-most-watched game of the 2023-24 season. More than one million viewers tuned in to see games against Maryland and Indiana, too.
Iowa has played in four of the six most-watched women’s college basketball games this season.theathletic.com/5272781/2024/02/15/caitlin-clark-peacock-how-to-watch/Tonight’s game is on Peacock.

There was an article in the WSJ last week (Friday, 2/9 - "Clark's NCAA Record Will Have an Asterisk") outlining an argument that Caitlin Clark breaking the all-time women's basketball scoring record won't be legitimate. The basic premises were that a.) a woman named Lynette Woodard, who played for Kansas in the late-'70s should be recognized for her 3,649 point, not Kelsey Plum, who scored 3,527 points for Washington from 2013-17, and b.) Woodard played when women's sports were governed by the AIWA (Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women) and those records aren't recognized by the NCAA. Stanford's Tara VanDerVeer argues that Woodard should be recognized as the all-time leader, and that the AIWA records should be incorporated into the NCAA record book. Fine. Do that, and put Woodard at number one - ahead of Plum.
As of this writing, Clark has 3,520 points, and Iowa has five regular season games left on its schedule. As such, it's very likely that Clark will break Woodard's number before the Big-10 playoffs begin, but almost certainly before the end of her season/career - no matter how long that might stretch.
With this in mind, the argument turns to Woodard not having the three-point shot available in her day. I've done the math, and if Clark had no three-point shot available, but took the same number of additional two-point attempts as she's taken threes, and made those additional twos at her career two-point shooting percentage, she would only be an additional forty-four points behind Woodard - and would still likely break Woodard's record before she's done.
Woodard was certainly a great player. She could play all five positions, and was the captain of the gold medal-winning 1984 women's Olympic team. Certainly, one of the greats, but if Caitlin Clark beats Woodard's mark, and especially if she breaks it by more than the forty-four points that I've referenced above, she should rightly be recognized as the all-time leading scorer - without an asterisk. Frankly, while not demeaning Woodard's accomplishment, even when/if her numbers are added to the NCAA record books, an asterisk referencing her play in the AIWA would be completely justified.

And the worst part of all this is how few fans, not in the Arena, will see tonight’s probable record breaking performance live. Clue: It is exclusively on peacock.

Clark gets the NCAA Women’s D-1 scoring record tonight with 49 points (and 13 assists) during Iowa’s win and the announcers noted she’s about 100 points from Pete Maravich’s NCAA D-1 record.

Caitlyn Clark has an interesting decision to weigh regarding a return (using her Covid year) to Iowa or heading into the WNBA draft. She is earning real NIL endorsement money now while playing to a very large TV and arena audience, she is surrounded by supportive friends and family (and boyfriend), and she enjoys being part of a winning team.
Not sure how popular the WNBA is (by comparison) and she may not be in a hurry to head there for a number of other reasons.

Paige Bueckers just made the right financial and happiness decision to remain at UConn for her Covid year - she (like Clark) make much more playing in college. Another legit reason Bueckers is coming back is because she has missed so much time due to injury, while Clark has generally been injury free.

Speaking of Clark - saw this on CNN site today: Clark’s jerseys and shirts bearing her name are flying off the (virtual) shelves at Fanatics, with the guard becoming the online retailer’s top-selling college athlete since it began selling collegiate athletic apparel in 2022, the website told CNN.

Caitlin Clark breaks Lynette Woodard's women's scoring record, still chasing Pete Maravich Caitlin Clark notched her 17th career triple-double in Iowa’s 108-60 win, tallying 33 points, 12 assists and 10 rebounds.
Clark, who is nicknamed “Ponytail Pete," has one regular-season game remaining and needs just 18 points to top Maravich. The Hawkeyes will face No. 2 Ohio State in Iowa City on Sunday afternoon. www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaaw/bigten/2024/02/28/iowa-vs-minnesota-score-live-updates-highlights-caitlin-clark/72758672007/While we all know the differences with Pistol Pete (he did it in three years and no 3-pointer, for example), perhaps she’ll also wind up in a better situation when she arrives on her first pro team.

Next year she will be using the Covid year, but she also missed all of the 2022–23 season with a torn ACL.

Sunday might be very interesting as it's Senior Day at Iowa - The WNBA world is very different than college and Clark has not made a final decision about where she'll play going forward - will Caitlin come out with her parents ? It will also be a great game as no.2 Ohio St. is the opponent

A few pro and ex-pro women players have taken it upon themselves to predict that Caitlyn Clark won’t see great success in the WNBA.
It will be interesting to see if this is her last season in Iowa.
Pete Maravich landed in an unfortunate situation in Atlanta that did not help his transition to the pros (despite his immense talent).
I’m sure Caitlyn and her family will carefully eyeball potential WNBA teams prior to a decision. I’m not sure how comfortable she’ll be in today’s WNBA (I’ll leave it at that) so it really has to be a good team fit.

When she heads to the WNBA maybe she pulls an Eli Manning and forces herself off a crappy team with a high draft pick to the best team and coach for her.

The fact that Indiana has the pick is no doubt an attraction and a comfort level for Caitlin Clark. Her presence in professional basketball represents an opportunity for the WNBA to broaden its appeal. In the mid west and otherwise.

Move aside Pistol Pete Maravich. Caitlin Clark breaks the all time NCAA scoring record. Both great scorers.
