Ben Malgeri, who started his college baseball career at HC and then transferred to Northeastern and was drafted by the Tigers in the 18th round of the 2021 draft, singled, scored a run and drove in a run in the exhibition opener yesterday.
He projects as the opening day CF for the Tigers’ AA affiliate in Erie this year. Seems as if the scouting report on him is good speed, good defense, increasing power (13 HRs in 99 games at Erie last year) but a lot of swing and miss (288 Ks in 928 minor league ABs). If he can cut down on the Ks, he has a chance to make his MLB debut in a few years.

MLB doesn't care about strikeouts like they used to as seen by the increase of them in the league over the last ten years.

I agree that there is a much greater tolerance for Ks now than there was in the late ‘50s when I first started following MLB. Nevertheless, Scott Harris and A.J. Hinch are placing a strong emphasis on both hitters and pitchers “controlling the strike zone”. With Parker Meadows and Riley Greene organizationally ahead of Ben in CF and with their much higher draft positions, Ben probably has considerably less leeway on the production vs. K scale.

AJ Hinch had seven players last year with 111+ strikeouts.

It’s a risk/reward situation regarding the tolerance for Ks. With Greene and Torkelson (2 first round top 5 picks) and Baez with the six year boat anchor K, the Tigers are more willing to/forced to tolerate the higher K numbers prevalent in the last 20-25 yrs. in exchange for the anticipated production and hoped-for ROI. Not so much for an 18th round draft pick who is at least third or fourth on the organizational CF depth chart and in whom they have a modest financial investment. Make no mistake. I’m rooting for Malgeri to make it to the bigs, preferably with the Tigers. I just think his chances would be enhanced if he brought his K rate down from over 30% to something in the 20-25% range. And regardless of what I think, I suspect that H & H feel the same.
